I have looked but I cannot find any. Is there a place I could check

Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Computer locks up when playing 16-bit sound (Vibra16C)
Date: Mon, 01 Mar 1999 21:47:32 -0500
Hi all,
I've browsed through all previous threads on this topic, and found no
answer.
I have a Sound Blaster Vibra16C PnP (Model CT 4180). I'm running RedHat
5.2,
kernel 2.0.36-1, with module support. I'm using isapnp to configure the
sound
card.
Everything seems to run smootly, the card is correctly detected,
configured, and the sound drivers are loaded without any problem. I can
play 8-bit sounds. BUT any time I play a 16-bit sound (with "play"), the
computer locks up. Usually, I can hear the beginning of the sound, and
then ... nothing. :-(
I've read that the Vibra16X was not a real 16-bit card, but I have a
Vibra16C !
Everything works fine under Windows 95. :-(
I've checked what I could think of. Below is what I've noticed. I also
have a Sportster ISDN TA ISA (non PnP), and a NE2000-clone PCI card.
Both work perfectly. The DMA, IRQ and I/O ports show no conflict.
Help me, I'm stuck !!!

I'm trying to install a new SCSI disk on my linux box and I'm getting a
strange error.
The following is the output of the dmesg command. It's saying the
Seagate ST12400N has an unsupported sector size. Is there any place
where this is setup? I can't seem to find where or how to fix this. Any
info that would help solve this problem would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
I do not completly agree with the hint below ...
the MV 500 operates in a NON-interlaced mode at 1024x748 (read on Compaq
web site for MV 500).
I've got it working in 1024x768, 8 bit ofr the compaq screen MV500,
after choosing the custom screen in a non-interlaced mode
1024x768 @ 60 Hz. For this select ONLY
THE highest resolution wanted (1024x768) after the custom screen
was selected. (I'll add an extract of my XF86config file later on (cf

I think it's depend on what kind of BIOS you have, PnP or
not. Mine is PnP, and it has options "auto", "enable" or
"disable". In "enable" option, you have a choice of "EPP",
"Bi-directional", and something else (ECP?). I believe there
is a problem (or some tricks) in Linux with PnP BIOS PCs, and
you have to play with it. My laptop has non-PnP BIOS, and
no problem at all with Linux.
Hope it helps.

It's worth noting that among these `other processes' will be the X
server itself. So if you have a CPU-intensive (but single-threaded)
application generating animated graphics, for example, your
application will be working out what to draw on one processor, while
the X-server runs on the other processor actually doing the drawing.
(This benefit didn't dawn on me till I actually got a dual processor
:-) )

If memory serves... You need to compile with SCSI emulation support
(CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI). I'm pretty sure I've seen a write-up of
exactly how to get an IDE CD-R working; try searching dejanews.

Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 13:05:49 GMT
I need to create a Jaz disk that can be booted to linux on two different
machines with two different motherboards, video cards, ... The only
constancy I can count on is that the SCSI Jaz drive will be the boot drive
for both machines.
I assume I can create two different kernels and choose which one to boot
thru LILO -- an alternate would be to boot to DOS with a floppy which then
uses the OS loader to load the right kernel. Has anyone done this before?
As for the video, I need to run X-window on both computers. Can I reliably
write a program which would look at the hardware and then copy/rename the
right set of configuration and server files for the appropriate computer?
Thanks for any hints, suggestions, etc.

Subject: linux failing to load when detecting /dev/hda
Date: Tue, 02 Mar 1999 11:24:08 GMT
Hi. I've been running Linux for two years, and I decided to buy a new
harddisk. I have a fic VA-503+ motherboard (VIA chipset), 96 mb sdram and an
AMD K6-2 /400. I'm running kernel 2.2.2. I used to have a 3.8GB Quantum
Fireball drive at /dev/hda, a 1.2 conner drive at /dev/hdb (in which Linux
was installed) and 2 cds at /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd The system worked fine.
I recently bought a 10.2 GB Western Digital Caviar hard drive, reconfigured my
ides:
ide0: hda: the new harddrive
ide1: hdc: Fireball
ide2: hdd: Conner
I also have a soundblaster 32 pnp (dammit! :-) and I installed my cdroms on
the controller provided by the card.
hda is partitioned as follows:
/dev/hda1: Fat-16 500MB
/dev/hda2: ext2 (/) 2GB
/dev/hda3 fat-32 3GB
/dev/hda4 logical:
/dev/hda5 swap 128MB
/dev/hda6 ext2 (/usr/local/users) 1GB
/dev/hda7 fat32 1GB
/dev/hda8 fat32 2GB
I installed dos on /dev/hda1 and then I installed system commander deluxe 4.
Then I went ahead to completely reinstall linux (slackware 3.6), ans
installed the lilo boot loader in /dev/hda2 (so that I could boot linux with
system commander). The install went as normal and I booted on to my new linux
2.0.35! I downloaded linux-2.2.2, compiled it and installed it (I enabled
support for my VIA chipset). The cdroms of course didn't work, since they
were on a pnp ide controller. So in lilo.conf I used append=ide2=[come values
which I cannot remember] hde=cdrom hdf=cdrom ide2=reset and I also used
isapnp tools. The cdroms worked, and so did my hardidks. /dev/hda using UDMA
and /dev/hdc|/dev/hdd using DMA. Well... Not for long :-( Unfortunatelly,
when I boot my system, it sometimes hangs when doing a partition chech in
/dev/hda. Although the drive is normally recognised and displayed, the system
sometimes hangs when doing the partiotion check. I cannot find a pattern to
these hangs. It might hang if teh computer was turned off before, or it might
not. It might hang if win98 was running before and it might not. What is more
weird, is that I cannot poweroff my system if it hangs (it is an ATX) making
me suspect that the bios has something to do with it. But: win98 works
flawlessly, and the bios apart from being brand new (and updated) regognises
the harddrive. I've tried to pass to lilo ide0=reset and hda[my geometry] to
no avail. What can I do? Maybe it's system commander's fault since it's the
first bootstrap loader (and system commander does not support such large
drives). But I cannot update it, because for some reason the update disk from
www.v-com.com will not work. But anyway win98 works fine, so I cannot
understand what's going on. Also, I cannot understand why the system hangs
randomly. Has anybody experienced any such problem? Thank you all for your
attention Steven
PS: I would really apreciate an email reply as well, If you're going to reply

Hola...
I have the same motherboard, and installed RH5.1 and didn't have a
problem with the clock, and since I installed in on an UDMA drive I
waited to upgrade the kernel to worry about the AIC 78xx controller.
But...
RH5x installs are very limited to where they can make a boot disk to-
i.e. ONLY /dev/fd0. I have an LS-120 drive, and that didn't count (it's
/dev/hdc). I got around it by just not making the boot disk from the
installation, but rather waiting until the kernel was upgraded.
Hope that little piece helps.
