They're supported with the aha152x driver.

Subject: Changing the ZIP's DMA channel

Hello World,

I have a paraport ZIP Drive and the support is compiled into the kernel.
At boot time, it is recognized and initilized. The problem is: It uses DMA
Channel 0. But I need DMA 0 for my soundcard (it works only with DMA 0).
Unfortunately the soundcard is PnP, and therefore I cannot compile sound
support into the kernel, and so the soundcard is initialized after the ZIP
drive.
How can I change ZIP's DMA to 1 for example?

I tried to change
        hreg->dma_channel = -1;
to
        hreg->dma_channel = 1;
in ppa.c, but it the channel remained 0. When I try this
        hreg->max_channels = 1;
        hreg->dma_channel = 1;
(and the original row is commented out), then it recognizes 2 ZIP's, one
at DMA 0 and the other at DMA 1.

Fow can I change it?

BTW: I don't want to compile ppa as a module.

Thanx in advance and best regards
        Andreas

You should be able to 'insmod ppa' any time. It is not necessary to start
it at boot time. Try it with the zip attached.

: tried the following in /etc/conf.modules "alias scsi_hostadapter ppa"

I dont have that in my '/etc/conf.modules' but I have the following:
alias block-major-8 ppa
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

: but it doesn't seem to do it. I'm running RedHat 5.2

What is the complain? If nothing then its just doing it. Have you tried
'/sbin/lsmod' to see if ppa is in the kernel or not?

Are you sure you mount correctly? (mount -t fstype /dev/sda4 /zip)
where fstype=ext2 or msdos or vfat depending on the zip disk filesystem
and /zip is the mount point you have created.

I am running RH6.0 but was running 5.2 before and everything was also fine.
I also started ppa on RH5.1 and it was also fine (the conf.modules was empty there).
(I never started ppa at boot time, and I cant see the difference)

: Thanks in adavance from a linux newbie.

good luck
Nektarios

I have this card in 3 boxes. No problem (XFree 3.3.3.1, also MetroLink
commercial X server). Another common recommendation (maybe better,
but also more expensive) is Matrox Millenium 8 MB (supported by SVGA

What kind of system is that ? All PC systems should at least have 2 serial
ports, unless it is some sort of "all in one" motherboards.

Ah, OK. I just read the Dell comment, which states that COM2 (the second
serial port) is already occupied by a modem (probably a Winmodem).

>I found this ISA card=

No, they didn't. They meant that the _current_ system you're using
does not supply more than 2 ports. You'd need an add-on card.
The problem with such cards (as with all add-on cards) is that they need
a certain number of resources to be working. The IBM PC default settings
for the serial ports (COM 1 - 4) had COM1/3 sharing IRQ 4 , COM2/4
sharing IRQ 3 . This should never have been a problem, if the motherboard
manufacturers had been following the AT&T suggestions which allowed
proper IRQ sharing between 2 (or more) devices. This , however, has
never made it into the mainboard layout divisions. Only a small number
of boards has been designed that way. Modern (very recent) PII boards
do now start to implemet this, though.
As a result, you do need 4 IRQs for 4 serial devices (unless you do
buy an intelligent multiport add-on board, which is capable of sharing
IRQs [AST 4port, Cyclades products etc.]), and one IRQ for each
parallel port (if interrupt-driven).

>They won't say if that applies to all OSes (e.g. linux).

Partially. The standard Linux parallel port driver doesn't need an IRQ,
but the Win one does.

This is wrong. If all ports have their own IRQ , or if the card
allows sharing of IRQs, then you may use up to 16 serial ports
(or more) , depending on the card layout.

Wrong. You can't have the same IRQ for both the onboard ports and
the add-on card , though. But if you can use , say, IRQ 10 for the
add-on card , then you may use all 6 (or more) ports concurrently
on all operating systems without any problem whatsoever.

Partially correct.

?

Is IRQ5 reserved for a soundcard or something like that ?

You've to add that line non in LILO!!!
Add this line in

/etc/rc.d/rc.local

with a text editor like vi.
This is the easiest way to do it ... and it works!

Unfortunately not. I just bought one (30GB SCSI), and while it works fine
under Win95 (although it appears as a removable disk, not a tape), it
doesn't work at all under Linux.

ASUS P2B-DS (with Adaptec 2940 U2W on board). I've a couple of those,
another P2B board at home. I run Win95, Win98, Win NT, Solaris 7,

Never a hint of a problem. Also, many, many favourable reports all

Dear All,

when I installed RH 5.2 on my Thinkpad 360CSE I simply told it that I
wanted it to use my Backpack CDROM and it did so.

With RH6.0 (choosing local CDROM, Backpack, autoprobe) the installer
says: "I can't find the device anywhere on your system!".

Now I've got it connected with a docking bay (the exact same set-up as

working.

Any ideas?
