Subject: Are these components supported by Suse-Linux?
Date: 2 Mar 1999 19:08:51 +0100
Hello Linux-Experts,
yesterday, a local dealer made me an offer by arranging a computer
configuration for me.
Unfortunately, he wasn't willing to give me a guarantee that Linux
supports every component, nor a right to exchange.
A view into the data base of those components which are supported
by Suse-Linux (http://www.suse.de/cdb/D/) wasn't very fruitful,
because this database seems to be partially obsolete. So I want
to ask if someone of you could give me some information about
the following components:
* Mainboard AGP GA6BX(E) PII Gigabyte
Isn't contained in the database, but shouldn't make any problems.
* HDD 8.4 GB AT IBM DTTA-35840 Deskstar
Two such drives shall run in my computer, one for Linux and one
for Windoze.
The drive isn't contained in the database. The dealer said that
it is a standard drive which won't make any difficulties, but
he didn't want to give me a guarantee.
* CD-ROM LW Lite-On LTN-362 36x Max ATAPI
Isn't contained in the database. Somewhere I have read that actual
ATAPI-bus CD-ROM drives are generally supported by Linux.
Is this true?
* MO-LW Iomega ZIP ATAPI 100MB int.OEM
The database only contains the drives 100E (EIDE), 100P (parallel)
and 100S (SCSI). What about this internal ATAPI-bus drive?
* VGA AGP ATI XPERT 128 16MB SDRAM OEM
According to the database, this component is "probably" supported
by XFree86 (since version 3.3.3), module mach64.
The dealer said that this card is so new that there is no chance
to be supported by Linux. So he offered me something more expensive.
Has anyone more precise information?
* Modem Trust int. 56k PCI Communicator
Cannot be found in the database.
Well, I think that Linux has surely no problems at all with 1.44 MB
disk drives, logitech mice and German Windows Keyboards. Or are there
still exotic ones which don't work together with Linux?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Andreas Jung.

Subject: APC Smart UPS under Linux - Setup
Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 18:14:13 +0100
Hello,
I am trying to install APC Smart UPS 700 on a Linux system. I am using the
standard RS232 cable that comes with the UPS; it is connected to COM1
(/dev/ttyS0). When I put the following lines into the inittab:
# what to do when power fails/returns
pf::powerwait:/sbin/init.d/powerfail start
pn::powerfailnow:/sbin/init.d/powerfail now
pn::powerfail:/sbin/init.d/powerfail now
po::powerokwait:/sbin/init.d/powerfail stop
I get a message during boot-up "Powerstatus bad", indicating to my
understanding that the UPS isnt recognized.
I also tried the package ARGOUPS which tells you to put the following lines
into inittab:
nw:234:respawn:/sbin/nwrescued -local /dev/ttyS0
sh:234:powerfail:/sbin/shutdown -h -t 60 now THE POWER IS FAILING
However, when I am doing this, I get the following message during bootup:
starting upsd version 1.9 SN xxxxxx
Unable to open port /dev/ttyS0
UPS daemon started on port /dev/ttyS0
then, after bootup complete, I get several of the following messages:
intit: Id "nw" respawning to fast: disabled for 5 min....
When I try
>setserial /dev/ttyS0
I get a message
/dev/ttyS0 UART:16550A , Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
Who can help?
Thank you very much,
Cheers, Till

It doesn't I've tried, my only options are to either buy a new video card or
wait until there is a specific driver available. It could be that my copy of
Linux, Red Hat 5.1 using xfree86 is screwed. I've tried advice from people on
other lists but nothing has worked so far.

Well, there is one difference between those three that I can point
out. Each has a different refill mechanism: with the HP, you get a
cartridge that includes the print head. With the Epson, you get a
cartridge with just the ink. And with the Canon, you get a cartridge
with the ink plugged into a replaceable head cartridge.
The ability to replace your head is pretty much a good thing(tm); ink
jets can clog or get gook in them that just won't go away. This is a
flaw in the Epson design.
None of these printers offers fully independant relaceable heads and
ink cartridges; that is a feature reserved for higher-end printers.
None of these printers offers separate CMY ink either; if you print
lots of light blue, you'll be wasting lots of magenta and yellow ink.
That's what you get in a cheap printer.
If all else fails, you can usually ask canon, epson, or hp for a print
sample to be mailed to you...

With Red Hat 5.2, you should be able to easily configure this in the
printtool so long as the printer "speaks" lpd; it probably does.
If that fails, consult the Printing HOWTO; URL below.
I beleive that you want to use Ghostscript's ljet2p driver for this
printer; you may only be able to print at 300dpi since the printer
appears to speak only PCL level 4. I may however be wrong; please let
me know if so so that I can update the HOWTO's compatability listing
with better information.

It should do: it did it for me when I found that instruction
when I read the docs with cdrecord and in the HOWTO. If you can't get
it to work, mail me and I'll give yo u a detailed list of what I did
to get my Mitsumi cdr to work.

Yes, I have one and there is even 2 different drivers for it !!!
Works really fine. The DC-310U is also supported.

The folks at RedHat have got themselves a little bit confused about
support for the backpack. The real problem is that the driver on their
boot disk is old, obsolete and buggy (no, I'm not slagging them, I wrote
it). Unfortunately they don't have space on the disk to install the newer
"PARIDE" drivers.
However, if you go to the Linux parport web page:
http://www.torque.net/parport/
you'll find a link to a page with a replacement boot disk for RedHat 5.2.
That boot disk supports several brands of parallel port CD-ROMs (many of
which can obtained for significantly less than the MicroSolutions products).
The most economical solution might be to get an empty case from H45 (they're
sold by Tiger Direct in the US) and put in an old ATAPI CD-ROM from your
spares collection ;-)
There's nothing wrong with the MSI backpacks, by the way - they are
good value, and well built. The irony is that one of them will set your
friend back more than the value of his 486 !
Anyway ... if you find a brand of PP CD-ROM and you aren't sure if the
alternate boot disk supports it, please feel free to contact me.

The generic answer is yes. Go to http://www.torque.net/parport/ for
more details.
But, the brand name "Plugger" is not known to me, can you point me to
a web page for this product, or help me get old of a DOS installation
disk for one ? (I can often identify the device from a listing of
the files on the installation disk.)

Hi!
Thank you for your quick response.
My solution was much simpler.
As someone else mentioned on other threads, I realized that
my BIOS setup for the parallel port was "auto". After I
changed it to "enable", voila! it prints ok.
I remember I played with it a while ago, and also recompiled
my kernel several times, so it must be messed up at that time.
Thanks again for your help!

I'm not a Linux expert either, and haven't toyed with it in several
months. However, I have the same video card, and RH5.1, and haven't
had any problems, except that it keeps defaulting to 1280x1024 mode
which is too small. I think it does default to the Rage Pro, which is
the brain of the AIW Pro card. I don't know if there's any
differences between British English and American English. All I can
say is that itt does/can work. God Luck.
