Subject: Keyboard dead at login prompt
Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2000 09:18:16 -0400

I have a dual booting pc (Win98/Linux), which started behaving
strangely today.
When it gets to the "boot:" prompt, I type in "linux", as usual.
But then, when it gets to the "login:" prompt, the keyboard is seemingly
dead! I've tried 2 different keyboards, and I've tried booting from my
emergency disk, with the same results. The keyboard works at the boot
prompt, but not when I get to login!
If I boot into Windows, the keyboard works normally.

This may be relevant: I had been using a Belkin 4-port
monitor/keyboard/mouse switcher connected to my 2 pcs. This morning, I
found that the MOUSE on my OTHER PC (with Win 98 only) would no longer
work, until I bypassed the switcher. So now I'm using the switcher just
for the monitor, and have keyboards and mice plugged directly into the 2
pcs. But I'm still having the above-mentioned keyboard problem in
Linux.

Any suggestions will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! (I'm going to go see
now if I can telnet into the linux pc from the other one...)

Linux caches its writes. The copy from floppy may not be complete unless
you wait after step 3. Also, the programme may try to write to the floppy
to update the time stamp (indicating the last time the file on the floppy
was accessed) (if you interrupt it while it is writing to the fat
sector(s) on the floppy, it will probably not just be a bad time stamp)
and if you interrupt while it is writing to the floppy the record on the
floppy may be faulty.

After step 3 you can wait.
After step 3 you can force a buffer write using "sync"

Mounting the floppy as read only (which was another suggestion) should
prevent the system from trying to update the floppy record (if you are
copying from the floppy instead of to it and as long as the file is
completely read into memory it can later write to the hard disk).

On a system which caches writes you cannot just give a write command and
remove the media (and copying from a read/write floppy may involve a write
command to update the last access time). You have to ensure that the
command is finished.

A dirty buffer message indicates an incomplete result.

Hmm... I tried setting the mixer. But there are no devices. /dev/dsp isn't
working, and a 'cat /dev/urandom > /dev/asound' gives nothing. Everything is
still disabled.

If floppy is FAT or VFAT (DOS or Windows) formatted, you should look at
the man page for mtools.

mcopy a:some-file /some/place

No mount/unmount needed.

mcopy
mdel
mdir
...etc...

Try the HP550(?) driver for X and Generic_Printer under Star Office. This works well
enough for me, nice text and OK color.

You could throw it into windows to see if it recognizes it, then take the name
it came up with and start your search from there. Linux might already support
it, too. If it doesn't auto detect and you have a day to waste you could try
all the modules and all of their settings. I know it doesn't help you write
the driver but you said you want the experience, and this would at least
identify the card for you so you'd have a place to start looking for specs.
What's more, is if you find that a linux module supports the card, you can
always look to its source code for help when you in a jam!

I have the same problem. Try turning on DMA
transfers (using hdparm):

hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc

I didn't know which newsgroup to post this because I don't know if it is
a hardware or OS problem. Whenever there is IDE activity there are
signals on the parallel port. I don't know about pins 14-25 because I
only scoped the top row, but 5-12 all have activity on them (1-4, 13 are
quiet).

I have been trying it on a couple of FLEX ATX board w/ intel's 810E
chipset. On intel's CA810E this doesn't happen. But on Tyan's 2520 it
does. I tried multiple Tyan boards, all with the same result. So it is
a problem with the Tyan board right? That is what I thought but it
doesn't happen with NT. Anybody have any ideas on why this would be a
linux specific problem with specific board (which uses the same chipset
as a board that works). Only thing I can think of is that they have
different SuperIO chips, but why does it only affect Linux???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shouldn't umount automatically sync before it exits?

I have a RedHat 6.1 fileserver that has about 30GB's of data that I have to
back up I also have a couple of other Linux and Windows machines I need to
backup files off.

I have been looking to buy a good Tape drive to do this job for me and utilize
BRU backup software.

Can any one recommend any tape drives that will work without too much
hassle under Linux. Price is kind of important ...

Thanks....
