Subject: video-card question

Hi,

I'm getting ready to build myself a linux box to replace my old 486
laptop, and I need a rough idea of what hardware I should be looking
for.

I'm probably going to use IDE hdd and CDROM, but I still don't know
about video card and printer. Last I heard, linux needed a post-script
printer to work, do most ink-jets support post-script? Also, I
basically just need a video card which will let me use X, and support
true-color. As for the network card, I have no idea what kind I should
get. I'm going to get my network card when I get to school I guess.

Thanks in advance

Because the SCSI CDROM device would be /dev/scd0 (first CDROM) .

For the SuSE 6.0-1 users, the following worked for my Epson 740

Look at the SuSE Support Database:
http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb_e/index.html
"Printing with kernel 2.2.xx" it says:
SuSE Linux: Versions since 6.0
Kernel: Versions since 2.2
Symptom: After updating to the 2.2.xx kernel printing no longer works...
Cause: With the 2.2.x kernel the "parport" subsystem appeared and the
numbering of the interfaces has changed. Solution:
1. Please use the kernel that was provided with your SuSE system, as
well as the modules that are included in the "kernmod" package;
Unfortunately kernels that have been recompiled can not be covered by
our installation support!
2. In /etc/printcap change the device /dev/lp1 to /dev/lp0.
3 . . .etc.

READ the Epson 740 (Redhat) document for background:
http://lcewww.et.tudelft.nl/~haver/linux/epson.html

CHECK to see if anything new at the "Printing HOWTO Support Database"
http://gatekeeper.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi

UPDATE Ghostscript to Ver. 5.50:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/SuSE_Linux_6.0_(i386).html
or if you want source:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/index.html

DOWNLOAD "epson740.tgz" from link at:
http://lcewww.et.tudelft.nl/~haver/linux/epson.html
and extract:
        README
        ps-to-printer.fpi
        printerdb

        stc740p.upp
        stc740ih.upp
        stc740pl.upp

MOVE the 3 .upp files to /usr/share/ghostscript/5.50/
Delete the rest, they're specific to Redhat

TAKE A BREAK : ) and feel good about Epson and Linux by READing:
http://eunuchs.org/epson/index.html

EDIT FILES
cd /var/lib/apsfilter/
edit "resolutions" by adding:
stc740pl.upp 360x360
stc740p.upp 720x720
stc740ih.upp 1440x720

cd /var/lib/apsfilter/doc/
edit "printer.menu" by adding:
stc740ih.upp Epson Stylus Color 740, 1440x720DPI, Inkjet Paper
stc740p.upp Epson Stylus Color 740, 720x720DPI, Plain Paper
stc740pl.upp Epson Stylus Color 740, 360x360DPI, Plain Paper

edit "printer" by adding:
stc740ih.upp Epson Stylus Color 740, 1440x720DPI, Inkjet Paper
stc740p.upp Epson Stylus Color 740, 720x720DPI, Plain Paper
stc740pl.upp Epson Stylus Color 740, 360x360DPI, Plain Paper

CONFIGURE PRINTER
cd /usr/lib/apsfilter/ and begin the configuration, adding each of the
3
drivers.
./SETUP

Send a thank-you to:DEPontius at usa.net he figured out the Ghostscript

I don't gaurantee anything, but did the edits.

I was having lots of trouble with my sound card as well, until I
realized that the PNP in Linux and the PNP in Windows set things up
differently (most likely, I had set up isapnp.conf bad) and I had an
interrupt conflict with a non-PNP hardware (either my internal modem or
serial card, can't remember which..)

Anyway, removing the modem and serial card fixed (both) soundcards.. I
have a Crystal 4236 (?, whitebox) and an Ensonique AudioPCI 1370, both
seem to work fine now.. I'm using the AudioPCI, and of course worked in
the modem and internal card card too, no conflicts now..

Try removing other boards using interrupts (my Crystal was using *4*
AFAIK, dma, midi, wavetable, and another...) as they're likely to be
getting in the way, making Linux not initilize the sound card because
the resource is already in use.

Cheers..

Hello Folks:

I have a 486 100Mhz box... It's a bit old but it does what I need.
I run Linux and Windows.

I need to get a faster modem.. I dropped by the local Computer City and
all they have are Win Modems! Heck all I want is a Modem with jumpers
on it so that I can set the COMM port and IRQ to get it to work with
Linux.. like my 14.4 Boca.

Can you guys recommend me a relatively inexpensive 56K internal modem
which will work with Linux as well as with Windows. I'd really
appreciate it.

Yes, I have mine up and running. Use "YAST" to install your
printer. Choose "other printers" and choose "stcolor".

Because of some electronics quirk, you might have to power
down your printer, wait a few minutes, and powerd back up
(after your YAST printer install).-

This works for me .

Subject: PAS16: how??
Date: 21 Jun 1999 14:26:35 GMT

Hi,

I have a PAS16 sound+scsi card. This card has two sound channels (one is
an 8 bit sb-type channel and the other is a 16 bit "native" channel) and
one scsi adapter.

Under windoze the irq/dma/io's are: (using conf.modules notation)
      ^^^^^^^
scsi: pas16 io=0x388 irq=12
native sound: pas2 io=0x388 irq=10 dma=7
sb emul: sb io=0x210 irq=9 dma=1

I used to have this card running under slackware 3.6 using the following
config: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

scsi: pas16 io=0x388 irq=10
native sound: pas2 io=0x388 irq=12 dma=7
sb emul: sb io=0x220 irq=9 dma=1
(swaps irq's of the first two lines and different io of the sb)

I could never, however, get the sb portion of the card working...

In mandrake 6.0:
   ^^^^^^^^^^^^
I have not been able to have the sb part work (I think I tried all
possible parameters sb_io sb_dma sb_irq, etc...). This does not concern
me very much though (although it would be nice to have both working if I
decide to do internet telephony later and have full duplex using both
sub-cards). The biggest problem is that if I configure pas2 (native
sound) to use irq 12 I get many errors reporting irq conflicts. It does
work with irq 10 but then pas16 (the scsi adapter) refuses to use an irq
and uses the awful polled mode, it does not take irq 12.

What can I do? There isn't an irq setting for the module pas16 , neither
in make xconfig, nor while using modprobe or kerneld and pas2 refuses to
work with anything but irq 10.

Also: is there a way of removing the overly complicated rc.d structure and
using a simpler one like in slackware? The mandrake scripts are
undesciphreable and the graphic configuration tools are very limited.

Thanks!!

Uprading to RH 6.0 may well be worth it, but first try upgrading just
your XFree86! Don't redo your whole OS just for a new video card. The Diamond
Stealth S220 uses the Verite 2100 chipset, and the driver for this chipset was
added in XFree86 3.3.3. There should be versions of XFree86 available for
various distributions - just be sure you get the right version for the
distribution you're using (i.e. don't try to use the RedHat 6.0 RPMS on RedHat
5.2 or lower).

Yeah, it is. Just search for it with your favourite search engine.

My roommate has a Montego. It took him quite a while to get it working, but
I think most of that was because he didn't know about the OSS. The OSS
driver seems to work fine for him for playback, but recording isn't
implemented yet. Also, the OSS "demo velison" has a weird shareware
protection scheme where the driver only works for 20 min. before you have
to reset it manually.

Regardless of that, he's got it working well enough that I'm planning on
a Vortex-based card for my new system, so that I can get the A3D sound
for Windows games.

As of 2.2.7, there is at least some USB support in the linux kernel.
Mr. Li, try downloading the 2.2.9 kernel which comes with the Linux-Mandrake
distribution. It comes in RPM format, so it can be installed just by using
the RedHat Package Manager. You can get it at www.linux-mandrake.com, or at
rufus.w3.org. Once it's installed, use linuxconf to set up this new kernel so
that LILO can detect it. Anyone know if there's a HOW-TO on this?

I'm not sure whether this kernel has USB support compiled in. So you
might have to compile your own kernel.
