I have been unable to get my sound card to work in Linux.
Here are the technical specifications:
Aztech PCI-338 sound chipset, 128-voice wavetable, Positional 3D sound
Sound Blaster 2.0 and Sound Blaster Pro II compliant
AdLib compliant
General MIDI component
Roland MPU401 UART compliant
PCI Bus Specification Rev. 2.1 compliant
PCI Bus Power Management Interface Specification Rev. 1.0 compliant
Audio Codec '97 compliant
Support Microsoft DirectSound Acceleration via PCI-Bus
OPL2 FM Emulation
A3D Positional Sound
Supports Legacy Address MPU401 MIDI and Joystick
The Windows Device Manager reports the following:
PCI338-A3D Aureal Semiconductor
IRQ 9
IO Range D800-D807
DC00-DC07
PCI338-A3D Aureal Semiconductor Sound Blaster Emulation
IO Range 0220-022F

PCI338-A3D Aureal Semiconductor MPU-401 Interface
IO Range 0330-033F
PCI338-A3D Aureal Semiconductor Joystick Interface
IO Range 0201-0201
When I run Redhat's sndconfig, the program reports:
A PCI sound card was found in your system. The details are
UNKNOWN
Probe Results
No PnP or PCI sound cards were found in your system. Please
select your card type from the following list.
I have tried all possible Sound Blaster types in the list, and
I always get the following error message:
/lib/modules/preferred/misc/sb.o: init_module
Device or resource busy
Sound: device or resource busy
When I choose the AdLib type, the sndconfig program immediately
terminates without playing any sound.
Has anyoune gotten this sound card to work under Linux?

Thanks, I'll check that URL out.
I think the URL is www.storagecompany.com. The sub-range was called
Plugger, but it's from the same stable as the Shuttle range. It's a 1.2
GB hard disk that weighs almost nothing - very useful for taking big
distributions home. I have it formatted FAT since I can then share it
with every OS (have to use NT at work :-) ).
The NT device driver is called epathd.sys. The DOS drivers are ASPIHDRM
and EPATHD (you need both).

Youngser,
I'm puzzled by your response. I checked my BIOS
setup, and could find no "auto" or "enable"
setting for the parallel port. Instead, it only
permits "EPP" or some variation thereof.
Moreover, I've heard repeatedly that the settings
in Linux aren't affected by the BIOS settings. So
this is news to me that your Linux settings were.
In any case, my BIOS settings had nothing to do
with the problem. I haven't changed them at all
lately.

I would like to announce Project LIMP (the Linux Image Montage
Project). The project's purpose is to distill the community and
ingenuity of the Linux community into one very cool looking poster.
This montage is a collection of images that are arranged to look like
a parent base-image (a la The Truman Show movie poster, among others).
We are using the GIMP to produce the intermediate images, as
well for batch and manual conversion of submissions.
The final product's final image will be available on-line for
free, as well as being sold off of LinuxMall.com .
Please visit the Project, and contribute your GIMP made, and other

actually, what this "undocumented" reset is is simply diliberately
creating a triple fault. the cpu can catch a double fault and recover
but the cpu resets under a triple fault situation. the code placed at
the restart point is aware of what happened and gracefully recovers as
if just switching back to real mode. just like has been explained.
if you want the code, get your old dos 5 disks out and debug himem.sys
since extended memory is only accessable in protected mode, himem.sys
was constatnly swaping back and forth.

I think this is more of a function of a 32 bit OS than anything specific to
Linux or NT. You might want to look at Sparc or Alpha for a 64 bit system.

Perhaps this is a bit too naive, but why not just use `tar'?
(Don't know for sure if it works with your tape drive, though.)

Hi,
just add "apm=smp-power-off" to the kernel parameters in /etc/lilo.conf
and you're set for APM shutdown with SMP. Make sure that you run "halt
-p" or "poweroff" in your shutdown script.

I've used the ls-120 to write 1.44 floppies and then read those floppies on 1.44
drives without
problem (yet). This is my 2nd ls-120, as the first croaked within four months of
use, and always gave errors on bootup (may have been RH 5.1, too). New one ok so
far and no errors. First one made by Matsushita (sp?); 2nd by Mitsubishi. (DR
brands).

If you are using RH5.2 and a SCSI tape drive, you can almost certainly
get started with something like this:
tar cvf /dev/st0 /
In this case "c"reate an archive "v"erbose output, archive "f" is /dev/st0
which is the first SCSI tape drive (actual SCSI ID doesn't matter in my
experience.) Thereafter follows a list of files/directories to back up.
In this case "/" should back up everything.
Of course in Unix tools are kept basic so you can combine them in your own
way. In my case I made a basic incremental backup system out of "find"
and "tar" with a bit of other utilities like "awk" and "grep" to glue it all
together. The man page for "find" is daunting but well worth the read; this
is probably _the_ most powerful tool for backup work in Unix.
I have a 10GB disk but the "working set" that needs backing up, specifically
data which
- is not reasily reinstalled e.g. from the RH5.2 CD ROM
- is not junk e.g. /tmp/*, GIMP swap files, core files
- is not replaceable, e.g. */.netscape/cache/*, */.xvpics/*
- is not backed up in other ways, e.g. a photo library that also exists
on a CD-ROM and on my brother's computer
amounts to about 100-200MB, and that is the key to actually doing effective
backups.
If anyone wants my backup scripts -- which are very basic and not "plug and
play" foolproof but work very well for me -- they can contact me privately.

I am buying a dell system and want to run linux. I have some questions
about some of their hardware which I can't find in the compatiblity

I assume a Pentium III will run fine.
The system has a STB nVIDIA TNT 16MB PCI video card. Will that work?
It has a Turtle Beach Montego A3D 64 Voice PCI audio card. Will that
work? (other Turtle beach models are listed)
I opted out of their winmodem, since I know that is not compatible.
Anything else I should watch out for?
