I like Turtle Beach Sound cards!
Two organizations create widely distributed drivers for sound cards:

Open Sound System (OSS) Open to all - But not free
http://www.opensound.com/linux-x86.html
They currently have a beta Vortex I driver available for trial download.

Advanced LINUX Sound Architecture -
http://www.alsa-project.org/
I didn't see the Vortex I chip in their supported card list but review
their list anyway. Maybe I missed the Vortex chip in the listing.

Ummmmm....it's not a standard printer running on the paraport?? If it's
not, I don't think I can help you. Sometimes setting up a printer can be
frustrating. It took me two weeks to get my Epson Stylus 600, hooked up
to my Windoze box, to print over my network using Samba.

double check your partition

I had a very similar problem once... I went back into fdisk and noticed that
it was garbled... I deleted the partition and recreated it. Had no problems
after that.

The 2.4 version of Linux has extensive reworking to facilitate efficient
SMP operation.

Linus has stated that he believes that 32 or 64 CPUs will reasonably be
supported.

(From what I could discern reading the linux-kernel mailing list... The
kernel developers have been examining bits of code that would
lockup/suspend all processors till that bit was completed. By focusing
on these critical sections - they beleive that they have significantly
improved SMP capability for Linux... We'll see when some bencharks get
published...

I have a new install of Red Hat Linux 5.2. On install it booted fine from
the floppy. The floppy works fine under Win95. When the install process
came to create a boot disk it failed to find the floppy. Now on boot the
boot messages contain:

Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M
reset set in interrupt, calling 001711bc
floppy0: no floppy controllers found

When I attempt to mount the floppy mount returns messages such as:

mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/fd0 as a block device
        (maybe `insmod driver'?)

I tried the other versions like /dev/fd0h1440 with the same results. The
floppy drive is a bog standard 1.44Mb 3.5" Motherboard is an Abit BH6
running a celeron 300A with 64Mb ram. I tried rebuilding the FD devices:

rm -f /dev/fd0*
./MAKEDEV fd0

with no change. Ready now to tear my hair out:-{)= which would be a pity
because I have little left as it is...

P.S. You may need to upgrade the kernel version if the drivers don't
support what kernel is current on your system.

Intresting, then maybe this error has occured on other systems, but I've
just never been able to see it before. This is the slowest system I've
installed linux on (a 20 megahertz IPX) and the error message flashes by
rather quickly.

I had tried moving the swap partition around on the disk to no avail, so
maybe there are a lot of bad blocks on the drive. I checked the
mkfs.ext2 man page and it only mentions a read test, is there away to do
a write check? Or is this some kind of low-level format program I would
have to get from the drive vendor?

Which chipset is better depends on what you want to do, and how much you
want to spend.

If you're going to stick with Intel chipsets, you're supposed to
(according to Intel) go with the 800 series to get 133MHz bus speed, but
some motherboards will let you drive a 440BX/GX to 133. I have no idea
how well the 800 series chipsets are supported in Linux.

Likewise, you'll need a 800 series to use RAMBUS, which uses _extremely_
expensive RAM, and may be on the way out already.

Don't worry too much about future compatibility. Its likely that
whichever way you go it'll be obsolete in no time anyway.

For more info on the Intel chipsets, look here:
http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets

One last comment, if you want "lots of slots" with nothing built in,
you'll want to stay away from the ASUS P2B-D. The four PCI slots (and 2
ISA, but what good are they?) it has run out real quick.

FIC SD-11 MoBo is the best choice which is not available here. So I am thinking

What's the exact message it gives after 'Ok, Booting Kernel'? Does it
say anyone else than that? I installed it on our laptop (MediaGX
processor) recently, and after a few lines of normal kernel messages it
had a 'kernel panic' and stopped because I had installed a
Pentium-optimised kernel on a non-Pentium processor. If you have a
Pentium clone (AMD, Cyrix) that might be the problem, you'd just have to
use a 386/486 kernel. Otherwise, I have no clue; you might try
recompiling or selecting another kernel in the configuration utility (no
idea how that's done in Slackware, I only know SuSE).

I have a Matrox G200 and is one of the best supported card. I suggest you see
the http://www.xfree86.org for a more complete list and select one. I also
suggest you buy a card which sports a chip whose details are published by the
company. For example Matrox has published most of the specs of the G100/G200
chip. ATI also has published the specs. There are companies like nVidia which
is reluctant to publish the register level details of their chips. Don't
support such companies by buying such cards. Again consult xfree86 site for
more details in this aspect.

don't waste your time with the k6-2. it was old even a year ago (the k6, that is).

its 'ok' but far from current tech and quite slow compared to even pentium-2 chips.

try and get a k7.
