No way, new friend: give it to the poor (Win users). Only _two_ or
something PCI modems would run under Linux; see

I did not see this listed in the Hardware-Compatibility HOWTO.
If it is not supported, could someone recommend another low-cost

Hello, ladies and gentlemen:
I am running a private networking line between two computers.
One is a dual PII/400, Red Hat Linux 5.2, with soft raid set up as my
server. The other is a dual PII/333, tweaked quite a bit, with 256MB
of main memory and two 4GB SCSI-UW drives on an AHA-2940UW controller
and both boxen are connected to a BNC network with coaxials (one with
a D-Link 530CT, the other with a D-Link 220 ISA card). Server has a
3C905b as eth1; client side (the PII/333s) has a VIA-Rhine D-Link.
I should mention that transmission is apparently normal: data
is moved across my twisted CAT-5 at a rate that is several times more
than what a 10Mbps coax can do, although far short of the 10+ MB/s of
the optimal value. But what makes be nervous is this ...
Can anyone shed any light for me?

IBM keyboards are usually very good. The opposite scenario (motherboard
has timing problems with random keyboards, IBM keyboard fixes them) is
much more common. For example, I had occasional spurious key repeats
under Linux (only) with my Abit BX6 and NMB RT-101+, and they went away
when I bought an IBM keyboard. Similar stories abound with the Abit LX6,
which had enough keyboard problems that someone made a web page about
them. (I can't find it; it may be gone.)
If your BIOS has settings like 8- and 16-bit IO timings, try increasing
them. If there's a bootup delay setting, try increasing that too. If
you're using some kind of AT to PS/2 keyboard adapter, try another one.
Otherwise, I don't know, short of using a different keyboard or
motherboard, or just keep hitting the reset button after every cold
boot. (Think of it as a security feature. :-> )

Currently someone has managed to put up a driver for the 7000/7200 which

Give your zipdrive an entry in fstab, then it'll get mounted
automatically at boot time. You should be running kerneld or
kmod so that modules get loaded on demand, if you have compiled
ppa support as a module.

Most motherboard BIOS can be configured to choose between a couple choices
when power is restored. You would want to choose Resume Last State, or

Hi Kevin,
According to my /proc/pci
....
Bus 0, device 16, function 0:
Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq Unknown device (rev 6).
Vendor id=1274. Device id=1371.
Slow devsel. IRQ 10. Master Capable. Latency=64. Min
Gnt=12.Max Lat=128.
I/O at 0xdf00 [0xdf01].
....
my SB16PCI is identified as an Ensoniq 1371 so you should be able
to use the builtin Creative/Ensoniq AudioPCI 1371 support in Linux.
Just run sndconfig and it should set it up.
Midi support isn't there yet but you can use TiMidity compiled with
esound support(softmidi). TiMidity/SB16PCI sounds good with the
GUS patches :)

I've recently installed a 2GB JAZ drive into a PC with an ADAPTEC 2940
SCSI controller. The JAZ drive is the only thing on the SCSI bus.
When the PC boots, the ADAPTEC controller identifies the JAZ drive.
The 2.0.35 kernel identifies the ADAPTEC controller but doesn't see
the JAZ drive.
Is the 2GB JAZ supported by the 2.0.3x kernels or do I need to switch
to a 2.2.x kernel?
Is there something I'm missing in the kernel config?
CONFIG_SCSI=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD=y
CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=y
CONFIG_SCSI_AIC7XXX=y
Can any one send me the relevant parts of their kernel config?
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Roland.

Hi,
i ve managed to work the same sound card today on two
Slacware40 system with kernel 2.2.6.
No problems. How i do this:
Recompile the kernel adding sound card support directly into
the kernel.
For compiling kernel you oughtto read some howtos such as
Kernel-Howto, Lilo mini howto
and actually Sound-Howto.
cd to /usr/src/linux
and do a # make xconfig (under Xwindows)
Enter to the sound section
Say yes ONLY to those below:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
*OSS Sound Modules <y>
*100% Soundbalster compatibles <y>
change only irq to 5 (default is 7)
leave others untouched!
*MPU 401 support (not for sb16) <y>
Leave io=330 and irq 9 as the manual says so, you can also
take a look at windows...
*Microsoft Sound System support <NO!>
*Support for Crystal CS4232 based pnp card <y>
Leave untouched those ios, irqs and DMAs, yet you can change
the "audio" DMA to 1 also.
*FM Synthesizer (YM3812/OPL-3) support <y>
*UART support <y or n> its up to you... if enabled leave
those untouched.
LOW LEVEL Sound Drivers Section begins
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
*A strict <NO> to AWE32 Synthesizer
*Audio Excel DSP16 (sbpro emulation) <y>
safe to leave those irqs and DMAs untouched
*Audio Excel DSP16 (MPU401 emulation) <y>
safe to leave those irqs and DMAs untouched
Exit kernel configuration and do a "make dep" and than "make
clean"
"make bzImage", etc... you should really read those
howtos...
Note that i ve been talking just abt the sound section of
the kernel configuration.
Other sections may need editing, especially Processor type
for better performance.
Reboot your linux and enter it with the new kernel. Please
Do NOT forget to do an /sbin/lilo before rebooting. This may
lead u a trouble with RedHat
if u dont have a boot disk. If there is not why don't u do
one?
You should see 'sound config begins' and 'sound config ends'
lines with
some card specific infos in between.
do a # cat /dev/sndstat
or go into the X and try listening to Alanis Morissette cd
or a mp3 with the new and nice xmms (http://www.xmms.org).
Finally im not as successfull as i am in Slackware than in
RedHat and its modules.
I Use a 5.3 Mandrake with SBLIVE at home and Slack40 at
school nothing in it except
the poor ethernet card, 2x cdrom and no X at all with 16 mb
memory. So if anyone have a spare
16 bit sound card thrown away at home, why dont you think
about sending it to me.
I have a nice, never used hole in the slack box waiting for
it.
Ah finally, I am NOT sorry for my English
since i am not an English man in New York!
Colin write to me with good or bad news, wish u luck!

It seems like the ISA modem should work under Linux. You might try this:
1. Make sure the two modems are on different COM ports.
2. Make sure that PnP is disabled if present on the ISA modem.
3. as root:
a. Run the modem configuration tool and choose your (ISA) modem's com
port.
b. You should now be able to use netcfg or Linuxconf to generate
a ppp interface, or minicom if that's what you need.
That should work. Hope this helps.
regards,
Jacob.

Subject: Redhat + memory > 1 Gb ?

Hello,
I'd like to know whether the redhat (5.2 and 6.0) can adress 2 Gb of
RAM memory.
I know that, the defaults upper limit is 1 Gb (at least on 5.2), and I
found an URL on the net specifying
that I should change page.h and vmlinux.lds files.
Unfortunately, I didn't find vmlinux.lds on my system.
Is it normal and how can I deal with that problem?
Thanks in advance.

I am running RH 6.0. When I do as you suggest I get:
/dev/nst0: Input/output error
Any suggestions? (I tried /dev/st0 as well).

Well.. ..Oh no.. Ok.
Anyway, to search ../drivers/net in the kernel source code,
/usr/doc/HOWTO at hand, and searc.. a wget on some sites, an having it
at hand, and searc.. getting nic drivers (win, unix, whatever), and
searc..
It produce 'Both eepro100.c and rclanmtl.c have the number '82558' in
them' kind of information...

Hi!!
I'm trying to split a 1GB HD in two, so I can
keep windows and be able to
install (an small) Linux. Windows tells me that
I have 600 mb free, but
when I run fips, I get and old partition of 793
mb and the rest for the new
partition. When I run Defrag, I see there are
some files that can't be
moved. How can I know what are those files and
if they can be deleted?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Subject: Help with modem!
Date: 22 Jun 1999 04:06:16 GMT
I recently installed Redhat 6.0 on my dell machine. Modem that I have is
PCI Win modem, so no questions here. However, I've got ISA slot and I have
ISA USR 56K modem. Problem is I cannot install ISA under windows 98. Dell
support gives me some reasons i cannot use ISA slot for the modem, which
sounds like bull. Why have two ISA slots on the board if I cannot use them
for a modem?
So, my question is -- can i use ISA modem under Linux and PCI modem under
windows and how would I configure my ISA modem under Linux?
Thanks,
Andrey
