This is the Motorola SM56 SoftModem, and it is a 100% Winmodem.
I doubt that it uses a PCTel-compatible chipset, so
you'll probably have to buy a real modem.

Hi,
I have a HP Photosmart P1100 printer hooked up to my Linux computer which
shares it among a few Win98 computers.
My question is - is there a good driver for this printer that will let me
print from the Linux computer itself? Right now, if I print from the Linux
computer, I get garbage, but I get great printouts from the 9x computers via
Samba.
I would also like to be able to use the SmartMedia card reader that's in the
printer itself, if possible...
Thanks,

Subject: Linux BUG with Promise ATA-66 controller
Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2000 16:27:22 -0400
I recently upgraded my kernel to 2.2.17, applied the IDE patch
ide.2.2.17.all.20000904.patch, (from www.linux-ide.org) and I think
there's a problem with it when transfering data from one IDE channel
to another through my Promise ATA-66 card.
I just installed a new Maxtor 60GB IDE hard drive into the Promise
ATA-66 card on IDE0 chain (as the only device on that chain), and
moved my IBM 22GB IDE drive to the Promise card on IDE1 chain (only
device on that chain).
Everything works fine, I formatted my new 60GB drive, no problems,
system recognizes it as 60GB.
Hooked up to the Promise card are two harddrives, a IBM 22GB (on IDE1)
and Maxtor 60GB (on IDE0). Another IDE drive is hooked into the
motherboard's IDE controller.
When I copy tons of files from my SCSI drive to my 60GB, no problems
at all. Also no problems copying from the IDE drive on my motherboard
IDE to the 60GB. However, when I copy tons of files from the hard
drive on Promise IDE1 chain to the 60GB on Promise IDE0 chain, I get
occasional "Input/output error" messages on a few files.
Being that this problem only occurs when I transfer files across the
Promise card's chains, I think there may be something wrong with the
www.linux-ide.org IDE patch.
What can I do to fix this?!? I want to use my new 60GB drive as a
backup drive, but I can't because of occasional IO errors! Help!
Here's my system, it is a linux-only machine:
Intel dual P2-450
Epox KP6-BS motherboard, two ATA-33 IDE controllers on-board
463224832 total bytes physical RAM
Diamond Fireport-40 (ncr53c8xx driver) SCSI card
Seagate ST39173W UltraWide SCSI-2 9GB (linux boot drive)
Maxtor 30GB, primary device on secondary motherboard IDE (hdc)
Maxtor 60GB, primary device primary Promise card IDE (hde)
IBM 22GB, slave device on secondary Promise card IDE (hdh)
Kernel 2.2.17, with the linux-ide IDE patch
util-linux v2.10h with the linux-ide.org fdisk patch

Linux has a dynamic buffer cache that uses all available memory. Buffers that
are modified are called dirty; they are periodically flushed to disk.

I don't know, but just to check the basic stuff, do you have entries in
your /etc/conf.modules that look like:
alias sound snd-card-via686a
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via686a
Those are the ones I am using.

Hey Charlie... I have the exact same problem and would like to keep
contact in the event of a solution ... There are drivers that are posted
for the RH6.0 at Promise but they removed the tips on installation. I
have both of my HD runnin into seperate channels on the card itself and
use a multiboot config with w2k on top of a dos partition. Some have
suggested that I plug the drive to the board and install. Then put in
drivers for the U66 and reconnect to card. Ain t happening because I
rebuilt my machine countless times. Cygwin is great for editing the files
in a windows environment (on the redhat page).
please let me know if you re able to solve. Also - I did find one driver
for the card but it was from a taiwan university student and I wasn t
comfortable with testing those waters.

Oh and one more thing, again just to check. One of the steps in the ALSA
installation was to run the script snddevices in the alsa-drivers
directory (at least with ALSA 0.5.7), which creates the device files
that ALSA uses.

Hello,
to make sure the umount is done after the copy, you can use the "&&" instead
of ";" (the second instruction won't start executing before the first one
has terminated successfully
i.e. mount /mnt/fd && cp /mnt/fd/* /prj && umount /mnt/fd
hope this helps...

Has anyone used the Intel L400GX+ server motherboard with Linux. It
has a bunch of the advanced server function (dedicated server

I'm looking into using it in a rackmount web server and I'm wondering
if it will work with Linux and how much of the server management stuff
will work with Linux. The Intel website lists SCO Unixware, Windows,
and Novell but dosn't mention Linux.

You should read the Ultra-DMA mini-HOWTO
http://www.ssc.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA.html
Basically, you need to exec:
cat /proc/pci
and then find your controller in the output:
Bus 0, device 17, function 0:
Unknown mass storage controller: Promise Technology IDE UltraDMA/66 (rev
1).
Medium devsel. IRQ 10. Master Capable. Latency=64.
I/O at 0xd800 [0xd801].
I/O at 0xdc00 [0xdc01].
I/O at 0xe000 [0xe001].
I/O at 0xe400 [0xe401].
I/O at 0xe800 [0xe801].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe4400000 [0xe4400000].
Pass "ide2=0xd801,0xdc03 ide3=0xe001,0xe403" as a command line parameter to
the kernel.
This presumes that you have a separate Promise Ultra 66 card. If you do
(unless you tell the Kernel to change it) the two ide ports on your
motherboard are ide0 & ide1 and the ones on the card are ide2 & ide3. So, in
answer to your questions:
> 1. Is this solution safe? Is it alway ide2? How do I know whether
> to use ide1 instead? What if I'm wrong with that hex address? Will
> it trash my windows partition?
The solution is OK. The primary ide on your board is always ide2 (with some
qualifications). If you use the wrong address, it will probably just crash.
However, the address is not constant -- this is PCI -- you must get the
address for your system as shown above and in the HOWTO.
> 2. Is this a generic problem with ATA66 controllers? with just
> the Promise ATA66 controllers? Is the problem fixed in kernel 2.4.0.test?
> Or should I just assume the problem will still be in 2.4 and install

This is a generic problem with ATA66 controllers. The 2.2.14 Kernel doesn't
have full support for ide. Kernel v 2.4 should fix the problem.
> 3. Is there a better solution? e.g., making a driver disk with the
> "right" ata66 module on it?
Currently, the best solution is to use Kernel v 2.2.16 with the ide patch.
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/ide-2.2.16.all/
The August 26 patch is what I am currently using. Although there are now
patches for the 2.2.17 Kernel.

Why do you have the IBM 22GB configured as a "slave device"? I don't
know if this is part of the problem, but it should probably be configured
as the "primary device". It would then be "hdg".

I earlier complained that my kernel would lockup when I used the USB
backport patch. The problem seems to have gone away after I upgraded
to 2.2.18pre3. Great job, kernel folks!!
