Not really. One might argue that there is a tiny bit of overhead
in loading the module on demand, but that would happen even if
the driver was compiled in; it would just happen at boot time
rather than at runtime.

If there is a driver that I know I'll need frequently (PPP or ext2fs
are good examples in my case), I go ahead and compile them in. However,
for things like Macintosh fs (which I need once in a blue moon),
compiling as a module makes good sense.

No, these things get specified in modules.conf for modules. (If the
particular device is an ISA Plug & Pray device, then you also would need
to specify this info in the isapnp.conf file.)

Not knowing so much about Linux etc. I am wondering if I will have problems
using a LCD monitor (precisely the Proview BM568 or the TAXAN Crystalvision
680) - I am just putting together a system and will want to run some
distribution of Linux (no preference as yet). Will I need drivers and such -
since I know that they supply Win9* etc drivers with the product (not sure
what they do), but they don't have any Linux drivers for download from their
sites.
Thanks.

My system:
Pentium II 333MHz + 128Mbytes
Metaxor IDE drive (8Gbytes) - this is the boot device
Phoenics Bios release 4.0E
Adaptec SCSI AHA-3940AU (narrow) host adapter. This is a two channel
device. Both channels have ID7. Termination on the adapter is set to
automatic. Adaptec Bios version 1.34.1
Seagate Barracuda 18XL ST318416N (narrow) SCSI hard drive.
All connections are the correct length. Pin-1-orientation has been
preserved. A number of ribbon cables have been tried.
Termination is enabled on the ST318416N and termination power is also
set via the correct jumper settings.
The device has ID4 but I have also tried ID0 (the factory default). It
is on channel A.
Channel B has an Iomega Zip250 with ID5 and termination enabled.
Both devices are on the ends of their SCSI buses.
I get the following message when the LILO boot manager starts to install
SuSE Linux v6.3:
SCSI0 Aborting due to time out
SCSI PID4 SCSI0 Channel 0 ID 4 Lun 0 test ...and then some numbers...
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 4) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus reset for host 0 channel 0
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 4) trying harder
and so on...
What do I need to do? I know that a Barracuda 9L works with this host
adapter. I've moved the adapter card to PCI slot 1. I know that the
drive is OK as I have downloaded the Seagate Disk checking software and
that comes back with a positive assessment.
Thanks for your help.

You should not have any problem /at all/ using any monitor that will
connect to your graphics card.

No, you are not...:-)
Cards based on the BT848 or the newer BT878 chip will work among others,
however I would suggest getting an original one from hauppauge.
http://www.hauppauge.com/
This will save you some trouble, you may get with one of those cheap
crap
clone cards. I don't know which distro you use, with newer SuSE distros
those cards work out of the box.
Good luck

I also found it difficult to match the hardware compatibilities on the
SuSE site with the system specs on a hardware vendor's or manufacturer's
site. Have you asked SuSE? I sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] a message with the
specs of a system in which I was interested and actually got a response
from SuSE GmbH <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. It commented on the areas where there
might be problems and suggested what one might do about the problems. I
wrote the hardware manufacturer with this info about a month ago, but
naturally I haven't received any reply yet, even though I sent a follow-up
a couple of weeks ago. The manufacturer is obviously only interested in
quick sales and evidently replies only once to initial inquiries and not
at all to subsequent follow-up inquiries. But SuSE was responsive.

Thanks, works like a charm!
The first thing I tried was a new mp3 I got from a band who is
distributing some songs as mp3s before their new album is released. It
had some clicks and pops in it, and I thought it was the drivers, but
fortunately it was the mp3 and/or mpg123. (but that's not likely.)
http://www.myopia-rocks.com/ if anyone's interested. Good stuff. :)
I'd heard about the ALSA drivers before, but I thought it had something
to do with the ALS* card that someone was having problems with.. I'm
still sort of wondering what the problem was with the via driver
distributed with the kernel, though.. I don't know enough about
kernel/module programming to troubleshoot it, though.. yet. :)

Huh. You mean the difference between refresh rates is *visible*?
I didn't know that. I always thought you just had to make sure
the signal the video card is sending was within the range the
monitor's specs say it can handle -- a compatibility issue. I
had no idea the difference was visible. (To me, it's not.)

Flicker? What's that? ;-)
Seriously, the only way I can notice the periodicity at
all, even at 60Hz, is to wave something back and forth
in front of the monitor.
> The fluorescent strips beat against monitors
Then again, I have incandescent lighting here, so maybe that's
why I can't tell. Either that or I'm impervious to flicker.
(My first monitor was CGA, and I had flourescent lighting then
and never noticed any flicker (except "snow"), so maybe I am...)

Gnome is a system hog. If you don't have a truckload of RAM,
make sure you at least have plenty of swap space. I used to
get serious slowdowns in Gnome (twenty minutes to close a
window) when I only had 32RAM + 32swap. Did some partition
rearranging to give myself a lot of swap space, and it quit
happening. (Later I added more RAM too, for even better
performance.) Make sure you have plenty of *something*,
if not RAM then swap space. I recommend 256MB of one or
the other. 128MB combined at the very least.
If you already have plenty, then that's not your problem.
Otherwise, make yourself a swapfile and see if that helps.

can someone tell me how to verify keycodes?
I am trying to map keys in a program by their keycodes and it doesn't
seem to be working.
I have tried using showkey but it doesn't seem to work.
An example is the multiply key on the key pad. The keycode should
be 0x37. When I use showkey it just displays a '*' and does not return
a value.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

As recommended by someone else, select a card based on the BrookTree
chip (BT848, et al). Then visit the BTTV HOWTO at the LDP:

Your showkey is broken or doesn't match your kernel.
You should be getting something like:
=============================================================================
root@pollux:/root 48> showkey
kb mode was XLATE
press any key (program terminates 10s after last keypress)...
keycode 28 release
keycode 55 press
keycode 55 release
root@pollux:/root 49>
=============================================================================
And just to make sure, showkey is for virtual console, not X.

this is much worry about nothing - when you have real things to worry about.
Whether a mac address is read once or with every packet makes no difference.
The fact is, YOU are identifiable. The thought that CPUID is going to
be more of a tie to U vs your MAC address is rediculous. All you need
to do is run winipcfg or ifconfig and ship that info down. Sorry. this
cpuid is just a piece of *(& that lets people get worked up.
Get over it.

When you boot from a diskette, it often askes for the CD, but it then mounts
it at some point and gets all the files from the mount point.
If your cd is not bootable, thats what needs to be done.
