Thanks for posting this. I'm using an Amptron 9700 motherboard with=20

Okay, nobody could help me, but meanwhile I found the solution myself. I
wrote to the support of Fujitsu, and they gave me the link to a small
program (7KB):

http://www.fujitsu-europe.com/home/support/disk/software/UDMA66disable.zip

(Go to your neighbour and ask for a DOS boot disk first :-) )

Now I get these values:

# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 64 MB in 0.94 seconds =68.09 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 2.16 seconds =14.81 MB/sec

Now thats really an improvement... without UDMA the second value was
about 3.3 MB/sec, a little tuned about 5.5 MB/sec.

The problem was that the UDMA4 capability of the drive confused the BIOS
(Award). This little program switches UDMA4 off. A BIOS update would
probably have helped as well. Mine is dated Dec 21, 98.

This seems to be a general problem with UDMA4 drives and Award BIOS. My
brother has similar problems with his WDC 8GB drive.

when detecting it. I get Kernel panic and have to Ctrl-Alt-Del. Upon which
the SCSI bios does not detect the 4416s anymore and Linux boots up
perfectly. Any Ideas?

P.S. How do I upgrade the firmware of 4416s? .. and when to find it - I

Any Ideas?

i have an STB Nitro DVD that came with my gateway.
ive successfully installed redhate w/X and KDE
when X fires up, however, its in 320x200x8bit [256 colors], which sucks.
from the "bash" boot prompt i run "setup". and i get some configuration
options
the X configuration allows me to pick from some video cards.
in the list are:
STB Nitro 64
STB Nitro 64 Video
STB Nitro 3D

none of these options work for me
i have also tried the "generic VGA" option, but im still stuck in 320x200.
the ctrl + alt + "+" key doesn allow me to switch video modes either.
how can i fix this? is there someplace i can get video drivers?

also, the X config. seems to be having trouble detecting how much memory i
have.

The problem may be that you had to have used the dos filesystem to copy the
directories, since ext2 cannot be seen by windows. FAT is not native to
linux, even tho it can be used by it, and it is inevitably slow, when used
by linux. If windows COULD see ext2, then it would slow on operations.,
unless, of course, you used two different directories. and then, they may
have been different sizes. Windows 98 does NOT use asyncronous operations,
linux , of course, does.

It's OK to call the languages Brazilian and American, if you want to.
There are no sharp borders between dialects, variations and languages.
One can ask one self if not Portuguese is a formalized dialect of Spanish?
Actually, it was from the beginning.

Dutch emerged from the German, and French from common Latin.

All the indoeuropean languages come from one proto-indoeuropean language
which in Europe turned into three main branches, Romanic, Slavic and
Germanic. Those in turn branched out to the living languages of today.
Mixing, maturing, influencing each other.

The word for wagon is very similar in all these, the same goes for mother,
father brother, sister, sun, etc.

English is considered to be very mixed linguistically, a blend of Romanic
(Celtic, French, Latin) and Germanic components. Speaking with british
accent is no more correct than with the american. And contrary to popular
belief, british English is NOT "older" than american! Those two dialects are
of equal "age". This means in fact that it would be just as justified to
call the language American as English. Being a non-anglo I prefer the
american which is clearer and easier to hear and comprehend. It also appears
to lack much of the overemphasized social markings which seem to be an
important component of british speech.

American is in some aspects already a language of it's own, in the future
the deciders might decide that it will be called American as well?

This is normal, languages change and newer sprout from older.
Nothing to get upset about.
