Check out the list. Intel and SMC rank high for the network
cards. I've found with Linux you can tweak almost anything,
remember Linux was originally developed to run well with cheap
hardware .. so consider :)

I have the same scanner. Logitech's website had windows drivers (Win 3.x
and 9x I believe); I can make the card work in Win98 but for some reason it
seems to forget it's DMA and IRQ settings all the time. I can't find linux
drivers for it; the only thing I've seen is an old driver for the 1.0
kernel. I don't really think it's a good idea to load that driver into my
2.2.x kernel :>
BUT you are probably lost without the interface card; it's a proprietary
little ISA thingy that you will have a hard time finding on its own. Yard
sales seem to be a popular place to find them; that's where I got mine.

When it comes time to install Linux, you can use the Linux
fdisk program to correctly set the Linux partition types
(something I would not trust the MS products to do correctly)
and all should go well after that.

I have used Sony STD-5000 4 or 5 years now. On aha1542(CF) it works fine
with or without 2 scsi2 disks but on ncr810 (tried both drivers) the
tape drive is there but the data tranfer rate is very close to 0. On
aha1542 it is 300 kB/s without compression (as in Sony specs). The disks
work ok on the ncr810.

Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 02:27:18 +0200
Hi everyone,
I just received a zip100-scsi-drive. Under Windows it is working
fine, but I cannot mount the device under Linux.
I am working on a laptop with an Adaptec 1460-PCMCIA-SCSI-Controller.
The Umax-scanner that is also connected to the SCSI-Controller works
fine.
When I call "scsicheck" I get the following message:
sg0 scsi0 ch0 ID3 Lun0 ansi2 Scanner(6) UMAX Astra 600S V1.2
$_aspi = "sg0:Scanner:3" (or "0/0/3/0:Scanner:3")
sg1 scsi0 ch0 ID6 Lun0 ansi2 Direct-Access(0) IOMEGA ZIP 100 K.05
$_aspi = "sg1:Direct-Access:6" (or "0/0/6/0:Direct-Access:6")
which means that the zip-drive is known by the system. But I see no
way to use the drive ;-(((
fdisk -l gets this output:
Disk /dev/hda: 240 heads, 63 sectors, 839 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 244 1844608+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 245 262 136080 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda3 263 839 4362120 83 Linux native
No SCSI-device ;-(((
Even when I want to mount the zipdrive, the system has this error
for me:
mount: /dev/sg1 is not a block device
I hope somebody can help me ...
Thanks in advance

Your boot sector should lie in its own partition, and should be smaller than
1024 cylinders. In disk druid make a 10 MB partition (10 megs is plenty large
for a boot partition), and assign it the mount point of /boot. Red Hat is smart
enough to put the boot partition within the first 1024 cylinders. Lilo needs to
reside within the first 1024 cylinders. That should help I hope.

Hi,
I run the SparQ-Drive with Suse-Linux and had some starting problems
because of the use of the parallel-port because it was occupied by the
printer daemon.
First thought was to buy a second parallel-card but the printer daemon
occupied the second card too. So I looked at the source of lp and found a
definition for an array which holds the port, irq and so on for the
lpt-ports. I commented the one for the second card out, built a new
kernel and then it worked fine.

I'm running at 400 and 2.2.11 compiles fine. I wish Mr. Carville good
luck (I wish I could help!) One thing though, I noticed that my K6-450
was set at 2.4 volts instead of 2.3 volts. The manual for my
motherboard had described voltage settings for jumpers, but my revison
had dip switches. Evidently I got confused when I was originally
installing the board but when I lowered the voltage to 2.3 the kernel
still wouldn't compile at 450. I've given up and am compiling at 400.
A little off subject, but since I got the new kernel compiled, I'm
getting a "Warning: System.map contains wrong kernel version" (close to
those words) error when loading modules on startup. I
changed /etc/lilo.conf and reran lilo, am I missing something?
I'll contact AMD about the processor, and thanks for the support!

The Abit BP6 obviates the need for the drilling - you can now just pop
in the 2 Celerons and off you go. The motherboard handles all that.
Nate
P.S. The Ultra ATA 66 interfaces on the Abit boards may or may not work
with Linux. ATA 66 is still bleeding edge - you might need the latest
kernel or a patch or it may not even work yet.

Thank you for your response. No it is not in use. setserial only fails
when I actually try to (re)set something (like irq), not when it is only
probing. It even fails in this way when invoked during the boot process
through /etc/rc.d/serial . Checking the process table like you suggested
confirms that the port is not busy. It IS the right port, since I can dail
out through it with minicom, but is is very very painfully slow, which
suggest an irq clash.
Many thanks, JanC

remote control buttons there are codes on the screen).
But if I try to connect Lirmand to Lircd and run irw (a test program for

The log file of Lircd reports only on startup and shutdown and if

I hope you can send me some useful information of Irman and Lircd or

you can mount it with mount /floppy
after you changed the /etc/fstab file. In this file is the line:
/dev/fd0 /floppy .......
replace the "/dev/fd0" with the hd-device of your LS-120 (see

I do the same thing, (but with a dialup and OS/2 instead of linux on the

floating point maths involved in NAT routing. If you find the CPU is
limiting the throughput of the cable modem (486 is way more than enough for
my dialup) then try overclocking it to 33 :) My Compaq Prosignia 4/25S has

IIRC, this should be visible in /proc/scsi
My SCSI system is currently booted in OS/2 so I can't check
directly at the moment.

Just install it, making sure that it has a unique SCSI ID of
course. Re-configure and compile your kernel to include
SCSI support (if it isn't already) and SCSI tape support.
Reboot the new kernel and the drive should be recognized
when the SCSI bus is initialized (you should see a message
about this during the boot sequence). From there you should
be home free. Test the drive with the "mt" command: eg, "mt
status" "mt retension" etc. Then use tar or dump or afio or
bru or whatever to make a backup.

Subject: hda/hdc conversion
Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 12:29:53 +0200
Hi All,
The following problem I am experiencing without knowing where to find
references for help... Does any of you know any?
Have installed linux (RH5.2) on a machine containing one hd as secondary
master (hdc), want to extend with another hard disk. This fails in both the
following ways:
a) attach the new hd as primary master (hda). reboot. System wants to boot
from hda which is not yet formatted. fail.
b) attache the new hd as primary slave (hdb). reboot. same happens.
c) switch ide-cables: now, big 'shit' happens: linux thinks my system is on
hdc which isn't formatted (new hd) and it doesn't recognize the 'new' hda as
being a boot disk (actually it doesn't even recognize anything, e.g.
partition mount points).
How can I add a new hard drive to my system that is thus configured? Does
anyone have pointers to help?
Yours,
Thijs Cobben

The units are located in Knoxville, TN, 37922.
They have Toner and Fuser in them.
I'd like to get $50 for each of them.
Thanks,
Kent Rankin
