I've never heard of an "analog" computer, are there any advantages to it.
Does it process instructions at all... Is there a site I can go to?

The rather unpleasant way I solved the problem with a friend's
computer (which, incidentally, was a Dell) was to go ahead and install
Linux anyway with a minimal setup and run
hdparm /dev/hda
within Linux to find out what the drive thinks its geometry is. Once you
get that far, you can re-install Linux, giving it the arguments
hda=cylinders,heads,sectors
at boot time to ensure that it handles the geometry correctly.
I seem to recall that adding the word "linear" in /etc/lilo.conf is
useful as well, but I'm not sure as I don't have access to that machine
anymore.

For starters, go to http://www.searchlinux.com and do a search on SiS
6326, Speedstar, or A50, and you'll find a bunch of responses to this
question. I've answered this at least a half dozen times in the last
month...
In summary, you need XFree86 3.3.3 (which supports the A50), and then
you need to hand edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to uncomment the VideoRam
line, and to add sw_cursor, no_bitblt, and no_imageblt.

Get the updated RPMs from one of the Redhat mirrors
(http://www.redhat.com/mirrors.html). Then go to
http://www.searchlinux.com and search for articles related to this card,
and another posting I did earlier. This card DOES work, but needs some
hand tweaking with the XF86Config file. I've posted the entry many
times, so it shouldn't be hard to find. Searchlinux is VERY useful for
doing research, and you should get familiar with it anyway.

Basically the problem is that the auto-probe for memory gets it wrong,
and if you manually tell it has 8MB, the entry it writes into XF86Config
is commented out, and I believe it defaults to 1MB. Uncomment it, and
startx fires up fine. I'm running 1024 x 768 x 16bit.

Which card should I get for such a task (under Linux)?
I heard that SB Live! comes with a 2nd card that is good
enough for such a task, but SB Live! seems to be not
supported by Linux.
Aslo, I don't really need a soundcard. If one can settle for
less, that's nice.
The goal is to make few audio CDs from the original minidisk
recordings.
(I heard that MD is essentially not so different from DAT.)

Patrick,
Are you sure your modem isnt a "winmodem?" If so, it will not run under
linux under any circumstance, as it requires drivers built into windows.
Two past modems that came with my computers have been winmodems and maybe
more. Had to get an external variety in order to get it to work with
linux.
I'm surprised noone has written a driver for them. Wish i knew more about
driver development. :)
Hope to help,

I'll say. When I ordered my new machine this past winter I
specified "no modem" because I wanted to be sure that any
modem I got was not a WinModem. Imagine my surprise when I
got the box home and found it had a modem installed. Yes, a
Winmodem. A careful check of the bill indicated I had not
paid for this device, so I returned it.

I'm not about to argue gcc issues with an egcs guru, but how is he going
to get his hands on a CPU that runs on a Pentium motherboard that *doesn't*
have an FPU? AFAIK, all the pin-compatible Pentium clones do have FPUs,
although FP operations tend to be significantly slower than Intel's.

I would advise against that because of the proprietary hardware they put in
those computers, such as winmodems. You would want to look into the actual
hardware supported by redhat/caldera and compare that to the computer
hardware you are purchasing. Beyond that they use a lot of "on-board"
components making upgrading and hardware repair, difficult at best, and
impossible in most circumstances. Definately see if you could open up and
look inside the computer; compare those guts with the guts of say a Dell or
a "Home made computer (assembled by a third party)" you will see how cramped
those eMachines are. All around probably too proprietary for an open-source
OS.

Try mounting /dev/scd<x>, or /dev/sr<x>, where <x> is the number of

Tried the other ncr driver already ? The kernel says you should use
NCR53C* if you can.

Any idea why this is ? Is there another device on IRQ 9 ?

Sorry that I haven't a solution for you. My advice is :
- Upgrade to the latest kernel 2.2.5
- Just play around with the kernel options to see what 's the
bottleneck , for example :
Turn SMP off
Try the other SCSI driver
Don't compile one of the ethernet cards into the kernel
etc. etc.

Windows 0.3 --> 0.31 --> 0.95 --> 0.98 --> 2000 ?
How do they do this ? Stepping from an unstable release
to a superstable release ?
Perhaps we should add three zeros to the current Linux
release. 2.2.5 to 2000.2.5 ?
