SupraExpress 56i PRO has many versions, only one of them is winmodem.
If it doesn't work on Linux you've probably chosen the lucky one. Is
the product number 2560? If so you're just as lucky as me.. go and get
a replacement!

Check this out, a very useful winmodem site:

Hello All,

trying to install RedHat on machine mentioned above - 64MB RAM, Pentium 200
processor, integrated Tulip NIC, 1GB SCSI HDD om integrated Adaptec. I have
distribution on local ftp. Seems to be no problem until it attempts to
install bootloader (or create boot disk). Setup fails with the following
message:

An error occured during step "Install bootloader" of the install.

You may retry that step... and so on.

I tried setting "Use linear mode..." which advised as probable cause for
some SCSI disks, chosen MBR or first sector of the boot partition as place
to install bootloader without success.

Any ideas?

Thnx,

Igor

Subject: RH6.0 Install Problem: no initrd and SCSI trouble
Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 12:04:44 -0400

I tried sending this earlier, but somehow it did not make it to the
list.

---

My Machine: FIC 2013, AMD K6-2 300Mhz, 128Mb RAM, DPT 2044UW Scsi Host
adapter, IDE drive, SCSI hard drive and CDROM drive

I currently have DOS6.22 (on a IDE drive) and RH5.2 (on a SCSI drive)
installed. Both work fine in my system.

I tried installing RH 6.0 on the IDE drive. I booted DOS first and then
tried executing autoboot.bat in e:\dosutils\autoboot.bat.

The install immediately aborted because it could not find the initrd.img
file. The problem seems to be that autoboot.bat has a line like this:

    loadlin autoboot\vmlinuz initrd=..\misc\src\trees\initrd.img

initrd.img is not there in the directory mentioned above. In fact it
resides in the dosutils\autoboot directory. In the misc\src\trees
directory there are these files instead:

initrd-l.img (dos name)
initrd-n.img (dos name)

To get around this problem I issued the loadlin command by hand with the
three possible
initrd files I just mentioned. The installation process seems to go fine
till I have to choose
which SCSI host adapater I have. For RH5.2 the eata_dma module worked
fine for my DPT 2044UW card. But RH 6.0 hangs and I have to abort.

Now is there something wrong with the CD (because of this initrd
problem. I cant imagine redhat would screw up such a small thing right
in the beginning of an installation process. Looks like they never even
tested once ).

And the second problem seems to have cropped up in the newsgroup several
times in the last 1800 messages I waded through. Is there any solution
the SCSI problem?

Thanks for your help

Pranab

I thought that I had seen this posted before; but can not seem to find
it now.

I have one of the new Diamond Fire GL1 agp cards in my new machine and
can not seem to get XFree configured to run.
I have tried the SVGA server - to no avail. I have also searched for
another video card that uses the new IBM 256-bit rasterizer - no luck
there either.
This card has the 250MHz RAMDAC and 32Mb SGRAM. My co-worker has also
tried to get this card to work - he had no success.

If anyone out there has been successful, or knows of additional
information that would be beneficial; we would be very grateful to hear

If your system is being properly shutdown, with file systems unmounted, then
you have a problem.

On the other hand, if the system is just being turned off or reset without a

Any modern Linux distro will do. I like RH 6.0, but I'm not religious about
it.

You should be running at least software RAID on a machine with that much
storage. At least mirror with a pair of 18 Gig drives if you can.

And get a bigger tape drive. DDS3 drives, which hold 12 Gig uncompressed
are under $1,000 now, and very fast. Trust me, if that thing fills up you
don't want to have to babysit it to do backups.

As far as breaking down tasks among two servers, if you're gonna split it,
put the web server with Squid installed on it, on this box, and let it
handle all file services as well. Then get a machine with a lot less
horsepower and ram to run DNS, telnet, and mail. 500-600 people isn't much
of a load in the DNS/telnet/mail server department, but for a web / file
server, it can be a really big one.

If you find the one machine being overwhelmed, you may need to make two or
more to share the load and split the web site along logical boundaries (i.e.
www2.mydomain.com, www3.mydomain.com etc...) by department or such.

As for crapping out with too many users, this is a problem on many stock
installs. Take a look at /proc/sys/fs/file-max and /proc/sys/fs/inode-max
with cat. The defaults (4096 and 12288) are way too small for a big
server, and need to be set to something like 32768 and 65536 or something
right off the bat. Then monitor them under load to make sure you aren't
running out.

Also look up the docs on the /proc/vm/bdflush settings. These are important
on a big server too, they control the virtual memory system.

Make sure your monitor supports these sync rates before trying

I presume your videocard/monitor can handle a pixel clock frequency

I run mine in Win 9x DOS. Just reboot to DOS mode and scan. I save the
files as TIF format and "exit" back to the Win 9x GUI to work with the
scans. Works great. Oh, but I have a batch filr and program that loads
the drivers into memory, runs the scanner, then removes the drivers when
finished. No need to worry about DMA and IRQ conflicts or
forgetfulness. Pretty? No. Functional? Yes.

I seem to remember that there are other cards (not Logitech proprietory)
that will run these scanners. Hey, try going back to the person you
bought it from and see if it is still around - in the PC or in the
closet. He may think it is a bus mouse card or something. Or try
Logitech - maybe they have one covered in dust in the back (make them
look desparately) or can tell you what other choices there are. Post on
a newsgroup a "want".

ok...I've checked out the linux howtos, and I'm a

I've tried turning on the ide scsi emulation and

This makes IDE cd-reader into a scsi device, which

seen. Of course, it doesn't show up in the
cdwriter scan.

The official product name is CD Writer Plus 7100,
HP C4357.

Tips, tricks, docs to get this think burning?

Someone always recommends expensive Intel, 3Com, or SMC cards.

I can't figure out why, when the cheap Netgear FA310TX cards
work so well. There was a compatibility blip a while back
when DEC stopped selling the Tulip chip and Netgear (and
others) switched to a 99%-compatible clone, but the driver
quickly caught up.

Don't pay more without a good reason.

Then both of those PCI cards are broken. Return them to where you
bought them if you can.

PCI was designed from day-one with auto-configuration. Any PCI card
should be able to work with any IRQ the bus chooses to assign to it.

An interesting option that seems to be gaining popularity is to go for a dual
Celeron system using the ABIT BP6 motherboard. I was just about to build a
dual PII 450 with uw SCSI but the local garage owner swiped lots of my cash
(well OK he fixed my bike as well but it still knocked my buying plans for a
burton). So anyway, I noticed the *much* cheaper (approx half price) option
of going 2xCeleron 466 and am in the process of building that now. You might
even fit both CPUs in at the start on the budget you have. However, I'm not
expecting this to be an easy ride :( esp. with the ATA 66 hdd I optimistically
ordered. There are of course _rumours_ that those nice chaps at intel will
eventually remove the SMP capability of the Celerons, helped the decision to
get both at the start. I don't think it'll have quite the same overall
performance (depending on application) but this must surely represent the best
performance for price (or vice versa).

Does anyone know where I can get a powersupply ( new or
used ) for my Alpha PC64-275 MB. It requires a 300W
powersupply with 4 connectors instead of 2.

thx in advance

I got the same problem. I installed Slackware on my Sony Laptop.
The sound card is Neomagic too. It claims 16bit Soundblaster pro
compatible. I tried many drivers and couldn't even make a noise.

If anyone have any clue, please help.

I don't know why, but many disk tools like dd like to talk about block
sizes of 512 bytes. I have seen fdisk use block sizes of both 1024 bytes
and 512 bytes.

Yes df talks about a block size of 1024 bytes which is 1kB and is a more
intuitive unit.

Anyone get this to compile yet?

I tried various "beta" versions of 4.x but still no luck.

Does anyone have a good/bad experience using the new Memorex CDRW-4224?
I would like to use it for backups and creating CDs but find nothing in
the HOWTOs or FAQs regarding this drive. They sell at Staples for all of
$200. Write is at 4X, rewrite at 2X, and read at 24X. It would be a
cheap/fast backup if it could be used with Linux. Anyone have experience
with this beast?

Thanks!
