I have two hard disks.

Each off two separate DMA66 Controllers. Primary one has Win2K. Secondary
one has Suse Linux 6.4.

I can install Linux fine. During the Linux install, I requested a boot
floppy.

However, if I attempt to use the boot floppy the system stops at "LI".

Thanks,
Michael

Just as a snap judgment, it looks like you've lost the card. The bootup
message
comes from the card's BIOS as it is polled by the machine BIOS on
startup.
Thus, this is happening before any operating system code is loaded. It's
not
an OS issue, therefore, so I'd say the card is toast.

Sorry.

I'm setting up Slackware Linux 7 with kernel 2.3.99-pre3. My modem is an
external Zoom 56K which I got specifically because I heard it's compatible
with Linux. It works fine in Windows. I can connect with minicom, but when
I try to download a binary file, I get a bunch of CRC errors and it fails.
When I try to connect with pppd, my script connects but then times out
sending LCP requests. I've tried using hardware, software, and bare
flow control. I've tried using three different accounts: Earthlink, my
school, and another. Nothing works. Can someone please help me?!?

AFAIK, there is no such thing as a 'Unix' network. Unix, like linux,
macos, amigados, windows, qnx, even the lowly dos, are all operating
systems for computers. _Some_ of them may have a TCP/IP capability
built into them, like Unix and such.

Any of these operating systems can be networked to each other with the
right protocols and hardware. Some operating systems do not have all
the network protocols available, so normally one choses the most widely
used protocol to do the actual networking with, in this case I'd suggest
that TCP/IP be used on all machines. NetBIOS (aka Samba) can also be
used for file and device shareing, something that TCP/IP doesn't do as
easily. Most treat Samba as a plugin for the TCP/IP stack already
running.

CR> Nope. LS120 is a floppy, it doesn't have partitions.
CR> /dev/hdc is the way to do it.

Well, it *could* have partitions, but it does seem sorta silly to
partition a 120 meg disk.

It works very well here with disks that I've made a ext2 system on, and
worked equally well on one I just unsealed that was still vfat formatted
from the factory.

You should not make a '/ls120' dir, but a '/mnt/ls120' directory.
Once you've done that you should be able to mount a pc formatted 1.44
meg floppy by:

mount -t vfat /dev/hdc /mnt/ls120

You should now see the contents of the disk at /mnt/ls120.
umount /mnt/ls120, and put a 120 meg disk in it in place of the floppy
and repeat the above mount command. Again you should be able to see the
contents of the disk, and in both cases you should be able to write a
file, and then delete that file from the mounted disk.

It works equally well for those which I've put the ext2 system on by
leaving out the '-t vfat' option.

Cheers, Gene

Being a dealer, I get a lot of electronic junk like the combo card in
the HP. It's unexciting, but when I've collected a couple of hundred
pounds of board scrap, I haul it off to the local electronic scrap
dealer and I get some money for it. Usually not a lot, but worth my
while. Keeps the landfills down, too... Ben Myers

Is that 50mhz really worth it? So it can twiddle the idle process a
little more often?

ready mades have all kinds of 'extra' problems (IMNSHO)
Yours sounds like a 'corner-cutting, limited, substandard' motherboard
as found in most all ready mades.

   I use a p3-450 at 608mhz (oc'd). With hlts enabled the cpu's
internal core stays at about 22 to 27C, and goes to 43 to 44C under
extreme load (cpuburn). Without halts your cpu's gonna run hotter
and most all ready mades have minimal cpu cooling. So get lm_sensors
and keep and eye on it. Problem is you might not be able to, as most
ready made motherboards leave the SMB/i2c chip off to save a buck
or two.

First try moving the ram sticks to different slots, changing
their order. Prob'ly be a good idea to get 'memtest86' (do a
Freshmeat search) and run it from the floppy boot disk it makes.
Toggle L2 off, if you get no errors, try again with L2 on. If you
get errors with L2 on, but not with L2 off, then you've got cache
problems

Since it's a SCSI device, you should not notice a performance issue. It
may pause on boot to initialize the SCSI card, but Windows should run
fine.

I don't have the 8 GB, but I do have the 5 GB drive working. You need
to make sure that support for the IDE/ATAPI tape drive is compiled
into your kernel. Once your kernel supports IDE/ATAPI tape drives,
you should be able to access your drive via /dev/ht0 or /dev/nht0
(no rewind).

One thing I noticed on the 5 GB drive is that "mt" doesn't seem to
support commands like "getsize" or "volinfo," which worked with my
old floppy tape. Minor inconvenience.

Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited by law. Subject to
change without notice.

These days I actually try to find out why a Redhat6.2 installation failed, (I

At first I did not thik there is a problem but then, maybe there is.
Though I tried to install it on a MBoard with an IDE ATA66 on board and not as a
PCI card.
And more to the point, while installling, it raised no exception or any kind of
problem.
What do you think?

Subject: Modem Issue
Date: Tue, 06 Jun 2000 15:46:06 GMT

I'm having an intermittent problem that I hope someone
can help me with ('cause I am fresh out of ideas)

The specs :
- Diamond SupraExpress 56i Voice Modem in PnP mode
- Linux kernel 2.2.14
- uugetty configured to answer only

The situation :
The modem was working fine (I use it to remote admin the machine)
and I was able to dialin earlier this morning. Now, however, it just
plain won't answer. As the machine is remotely located and I've had
a similair problem before, I'm posting to see if anyone has any ideas.

Previously, in a separate box, the same symptoms occured. I was able to
access the machine, however, and I rebuilt it, chaning parts to find the
culprit. I thought I had found it, and when I tested it by re-installing
the original parts, it all worked fine (i.e. I can no longer get the modem
to fail, and it has all of the 'defective' parts in it.)

The only clue I've had is that when I accessed the box remotely (not
via dialin) I wasn't able to talk to the modem clearly with a dip -t -v
(It would talk to the modem, but VERY VERY VERY slowly)

I've been thinking that maybe it was a PnP issue, however nothing
in the configuration of the system changed between when it started
and when it stopped working! Is there any known issue with the Diamond
modems?

More specs :
Motherboard : Peak 630a SBC
Backplane : Generic, ISA/PnP backplane
RAM : Dane Electric PC100/ECC (1GB total)
Other hardware present : Kingston 21143-based NIC, Cyclades 8 port ISA

Thanks for your time!

Do you mean you get this error when you have an unused cdr(w) disc in your
HP9100? That would be totally correct as you don't have to mount
cdr(w) discs when you are going to burn on them.
