Subject: PCI Modem Problems
Date: 29 Aug 1999 22:18:37 -0500

Ok, I have a Lucent PCI modem 56K v.90 and I know it may not work, but keep hearing
that some of them do.

(Yes, I have seen http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html and it didnt help me,
sorry).

Here is the situation:

In Windoze the modem works at COM3 with IRQ 5.

Just before LILO I find that PCI resources are listed and I see

"BUS 0 DEVICE 17 SIMPLE COMMUNICATION CONTROLLER, VENDOR 11C1, DEVICE ID 0440 IRQ 5."

Then I login into root (under RH 5.2). I look into dmesg and see

I started xwindows, used modemtool and pointed /dev/modem to COM3.

Then setserial /dev/cua2 uart 16550A port 3e8 irq 5. (I also tried ttyS2 and
the result was the same).

Started netcfg and setup correct ip numbers etc. Now "activate" command
does not lift and dial. Nothing happens.

Then I went into /var/log/messages and saw that the error was in 'chat'.
Simply 'alarm' 'failed' and 'exit'. Basically there is no dialog between
the system and the modem.

I tried isapnp and the isapnp.conf file contains only lines with
#trying some address
#no boards

I dont think I have any Plug-N-Pray devices (also saw the Bios setup and noticed
PnP disabled there).

Any suggestions? Would help if you give a step by step instruction on
how to set the modem up. Pl avoid the default answer "go get another modem"!

Thanks

Hi there:

I installed Linux (Suse 6.2, love it!), X server, and can use several
different windows managers: Enlightment, KDE, etc. with no problem.

I really love it, but there is still something that I don't know how or
where to get: more fonts. You see, Netscape now only has like 10 or 15
fonts, and all the web pages look pretty much the same (not too good), and
sometimes, like right now, the letters looks really tiny. Is there
something that can be done? Is that dependent on the X server installed? or
the hardware?

Thanks for any help before hand,

Jorge M.

what do you mean by localhost address????

if you mean 127.0.0.1 then you can't do that

give each machine an IP address of say

192.168.0.2 <<machine one
192.168.0.3 <<machine two

both with a netmask of 255.255.255.0

then try pinging the machines at 192.168.0.2 or 3 and see what happens

localhost is just what it says, LOCAL to that machine only

You will have to install a True-Type fonts server like xfstt. You can find

I am using a G400 16MB 300MHZ RAMDAC, X recognizes this card without any
problem and works perfectly at 1600X1200x32 resolution. The only
difference from MAX is the RAMDAC, which doesn't affect X I think, but you
probably will only use 16MB of RAM for the moment with the X 3.3.4 server
which should be enough already for 2D applications.

G400 is really a fast card as compared to my old ATI Xpert 98, MAX should
be even faster.

Make sure your /etc/isapnp.conf file is good (don=B4t forget to start
isapnp).

Before you can attach opl3sa2.o to your kernel, you have to compile
following modules:
<M> MPU-401 support (NOT for SB16)
<M> Generic OPL2/OPL3 FM synthesizer support
<M> PSS (AD1848, ADSP-2115, ESC614) support

After that, run following commands:
insmod soundcore
insmod sound
insmod ad1848
insmod mpu401
insmod opl3sa2 io=3D0x370 mss_io=3D0x530 mpu_io=3D0x330 irq=3D5 dma=3D0 d=
ma2=3D7
insmod opl3 io=3D0x388

So, this should work. When not, please reply.

Hi all,

I am using the above card together with a Dell 17es monitor.
I have been trying everything to get this card to work in X... with no luck.
I just read it somewhere today that the Mach64 server would display funky
things if trying to startx with a cable connected to the TV out. Just
wondering if anyone has any ideas of what could be wrong.

I can get another video card working with the monitor I have so I doubt it's
the Monitor that's giving me the headache.
Also, does anyone know of the display setting "XF86Setup" uses? That app
ran well... I want to at least have something to look at under X.

Thank you in advance.

Try Open Sound System. I think the original Aureal chipset is supported.

Sure about that? The press release I saw said they were going to be selling
workstation and server systems preconfigured with Linux. I have seen nothing
which indicates they'll be shipping Linux on laptops. Given the sorry state of
the sound drivers and the trickiness of the rest of the configuration, I would
be very surprised to find this is true.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Originally RISC stood for a "Reduced" instruction set architecture, while
CISC was the "Complex" instruction set. Roughly speaking the difference
between the two is the way in which certain classes of instructions are
implemented.

In a RISC arch there is a small core set of instructions which are
typically all implemented with the same opcode length, latency etc...These
core instructions are then used to "create" more complicated instructions.

In a CISC arch a large number of instructions are supported, but with
varied lengths, latencies, calling conventions, prefixes, etc....The
result is that some instructions are supported directly and do not need to
be built from a simpler core of instructions (as in RISC) but at the cost
normally of optimizations and physically larger dies (a large instruction
set requires large numbers of transistors)

The reason for the split was that the RISC designers knew they could
reduce over all instruction execution times by focusing on a specific set
of instructions. While the CISC designers knew that they could implement
some of the more common complex tasks better if they supported them
directly than if they built them from the core instruction set.

The Result is that in general RISC architectures have better execution
time for standard code (code made of normal instruction patterns) While
CISC machines have better execution time for certain types of algorithms
that can benefit from the richer instruction set.

As an example consider the operation of converting from a big to little
endian representation of a number.

In the RISC implementation this would be accomplished by a byte and half
word swap procedure. In reality it would be done using a series of
register shifts and register to register copies. All told it would take
about 12 operations, but all of them would be simple and fast.

In the CISC implementation (using the Intel instruction set) this could be
accomplished by simply issuing the "bswap" opcode on %eax. All told it
takes a couple of cycles but ends up being faster than the RISC
version.

On the other hand something as simple as an long integer multiplication
will typically take about half as long on a RISC machine (and you tend to
multiply far more often than swap byte representations)

Prior to the 80686 arch, the Intel family of processors was CISC in
nature. This changed with the release of the Pentium Pro family of
processors. These implement the standard x86 CISC instruction set by
decoding it into simpler "micro-ops" (RISC instructions) and sending these
strings of simple instructions to the actually execution units. This
approach is sometimes termed a "hybrid" of RISC and CISC.

Similarly the DEC Alpha and other modern descendents of the original
RISC branches can implement an emulation of the x86 instruction
set via software translation of the code, but at their core remain true to
the RISC design.

To answer the second part of your question, "Yes" Linux can run on some
traditionally RISC platforms (the Alpha being a prime example) but this
has more to do with compiler support for the platform and porting of the
code to match various differences in register layouts etc...than any
philosophic difference between RISC vs. CISC micro processor design.

This is part and parcel of the kernel compile process. If you, when
doing the make menuconfig or make xconfig operation, tell it the
aha1542.c is to be a module rather than compiled into the kernel, then
the compile sequence must include a 'make modules' and a 'make
modules_install', a 'depmod' from the /boot directory, and if you are
using the ramdisk, a 'mkinitrd' with all the options. Then edit
/etc/lilo.conf to reflect the new kernel and such, and run 'lilo -v' to
install it all. Reboot.

This is pretty much covered in the kernel Howto's.

It does seem to need help, it occasionally stumbles for a few
milliseconds here, and even the right kernel version does it.
I get the impression its a DMA or IRQ conflict of some sort.

What are you running? Win95/98 or NT. I run NT, and dual booting NT/Linux
is easy. I let NT do the booting. I haven't tried Win95/Linux combo yet.
But I saw a mini-HowTo on my Caldera CD showing how to dual boot Linux with
different OS'es. Look under the /doc directory of your linux CD. These
mini-HowTo are short and to the point. No geeky talk from linux snobs.

BTW, I notice that linux access the h/d slower than NT, and the graphic
refreshing (like when you drag a window accross several other windows) under
linux is way slower than NT. Any of you notice this? I guess device
drivers under linux suck.

I've seen some references to that in the apsfilter package that I'm
using for that, but have not had that problem. I think the install
defaulted to the right mode for me and my printer.

Some printers will take a chr$(10) as both a linefeed and a carraige
return. If yours in stair-stepping text, then it needs both the
chr$(10) and the chr$(13) to do the lf/cr combination.

Cheers, Gene

hi,

take the magicfilter tool and use the driver for bjc600. this should
work for every bubble-jet-printer from canon.
if there is already a printcap and any filter you can do the following
as root:
magicfilter --force

Many people have lesser graphics performance under XFree than under windows.
(This is however not always the case, I'm using a custom XFree for the Monster
Fusion, and though I haven't done any benchmarking, it feels faster than under
windows). If you want better performance, you could invest in the accellerated
X server. I've heard it gives about 25%-40% improvement.

hard disk access slowing down is not normal, either you have a very non-normal
hard disk/controller (hmm, so much for grammar), or you need to tweak it.
See man hdparm.

I don't remember what is so crappy about it, but the SANE page (somewhere. I
don't remember where) said that the card was junk and I don't know if it is
supported under Linux. I already had an Adaptec 1520B so I used it instead.
The scanner works great, but the paucity of software caused me to move it
back to my Windows box (the 1220S comes with lots of Windows software).
