Hi,
Has anybody gotten Linux v2.1.132 working with the Scsi 2940U/UW Dual
adapter with SCSI Bios v1.33S2 and a 9.1Gig Western Digital hard drive?
Presently, I'm using DosLinux (the latest) and on bootup, the SCSI card
seems to be recognized for SCSIDs configurations (such as terminations)
and interrupts, but hangs forever and never sees the 9.1Gig WD hard drive
on SCSID0. Are there still problems with the 2940 SCSI driver?
The SCSI card has the AIC 7895 chipset too.
I see the Adapatec has agreed to help the Linux driver people out
developing SCSI drivers for Linux. How is this going, particularly
in resolving problems?
Here is my configuration and partition setup.
c:\ MSDOS and Win95 partition of 2Gigs running Doslinux from here
(at least I'm trying to).
d:\ NT4.0 and FAT of 2Gigs
e:\ MSDOS partitions of 2Gigs
f:\ MSDOS partitions of 2Gigs
H:\ MSDOS partitions of the remaining disk space.
NT4.0 works okay when I boot into it and it recognizes the disk.
MSDOS works okay when I boot into it from the boot menu and recognizes
the disk.
After booting into MSDOS and starting setup.bat (the DOSlinux mini
boot before installing the full install) it hangs trying to find
the disk.
I would think that if the SCSI driver can't find the attached
devices it would time out and tell the user that no devices
found or that something may be conflicting/misconfigured instead
of just hanging.
Any help appreciated, since I'll have to revert back to my
100mhz 1Gig IDE machine (thats out of space) and can boot
without problem any version of DOSLINUX from my new 333mhz
9.1GIG ultra SCSI machine (DELL Optiplex GX1) that now the
only Unix that it'll run is NT4.0. :)

The correct number might be helpful. We now have winmodems, winmice and
winprinters!?
My HP 855C works fine with RH5.2; it's not offered, so I selected
5xx-6xx in setup.
Best wishes.

nU-bEE,
Check out www.recovery.de and their product TIRAMISU. I used it to
successfully recover data from 3 FAT32 partitions (there's a FAT16 version of
the software as well) when I destroyed the partition table with DOS 6.22. As
long as the data hasn't been overwritten, it can be recovered.
It's free to download and evaluate whether your data can be recovered, then it
costs about $190 to register so that you can actually do the recovery. Bloody
cheap, compared to the professional data recovery prices I was quoted...
N.B. It only does 2Gb at a time, so do mulitiple recoveries, starting at
different sectors. Use PQ Partinfo (free to download from www.powerquest.com)
to check out your partition info.
Good Luck,
Tim

I've used at least a dozen different brands of NE2000 compatible NICs with
Linux and have never had a problem....Do you have the setup disk for any
of them?? Did you set the config on them manually??

No. A standard IDE port can be used for any IDE devices, since the
IDE controller doesn't really do anything. You'll have to lookup the
settings of that port to get Linux recognizing it, though. Use a
boot option like that
ide1=0x1E8,11
to get it working (YMMV, of course) .

Thanks for the reply! I've had the same thoughts on new floppies. I tried to

That is not really how it works. The Adaptec drivers, after the support
period started, were updated furiously. The newest 2.0.* series
drivers support all but the most recent BIOS from Adaptec. The
2.1.* kernel series is close behind. My stuff all works fine
on a 1-2 year old 2940 U2W card.

Subject: LILO/NTLDR and >8.4G hard disk =death
Date: 7 Jan 1999 21:16:29 GMT
Hi,
I have an apparently unsolvable problem but I will state it
here and see if anybody else has any ideas.
I described my problem earlier in the article titles "LILO: NTLDR
not found... Tough problem!!" (only in comp.os.linux.misc.. my
fault) Here it is in short again:
I have two hard disks. call them hda and hdc.
The disk hda is an 8.3 GB disk containing two ntfs partitions te
first of which is the C: of my NT4 installation.
The disk hdc is a 10.1 GB IBM disk containing my 2 linux
partitions. There is a small 10 MB boot partition with lilo map
files and the boot image under it...( to beat the 1024
cylinder restriction according to a LILO how-to), the second
partition is the root partition and the third partition is the swap
partition.
I have tried various different configurations , IDE assignments,
NTLDR/LILO conbinations etc to make this a successful dual boot
system but to no avail because of the following contraints:
1) NTLDR wants to be on the Primary IDE channel so the NT disk has
to be hda.
2) LILO apprently has problems with >8.4 GB disks if they are not on
the primary channel. ( that's my deduction from what I have seen so
far)
3) I must have the two disks as masters on two different IDE
channels because they both are UDMA/33 disks and I want them both to
take advantage of this feature to the full extent ( right??). At the
very least, the linux disk MUST be able to take advantage of the UDMA
feature because I have to run I/O intensive computations on that.
After giving up on LILO to be able to do the booting by itself, I
tried the NTLDR according the Linux+NT-Loader miini-how-to.
so I installed LILO on hdc1 ( which is entirely within the 1024
cylinder limit to ease things for LILO ) and then copied the boot
sector of hdc1 on C:\ of the NT disk and told NTLDR to load that oot
sector as linux ( all according to instructions.) That should start
LILO right? But it stops after showing "LI" which I gather is a
sign that LILO is having problems with the partition table of a
large disk.
NOTE: LILO load linux properly *IF* I put the linux disk on the
first IDE channel. So apparently LILO has problems with the large
disk ONLY IF ITS ON THE SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL. But if I do that, I
can't boot into NT ( on choosing NT I get the message "NTLDR not
found" apparently becasue NTLDR is searched for on the first IDE
channel ONLY even if my lilo.conf says otherwise ( and yes I did
remember to run lilo everytime I changed lilo.conf))
So in short I am at my wits end. If you have managed to read
though upto here, please suggest anything that comes to your
mind. Also, in all of my trials, I don't think I have left any of
the MBR's or partition BR's qith their original contents. So
anything I do will have to take care of each boot racord once again
( though I can repair NT boot record from repair disk)
( BTW, my BIOS is fairly recent and does recognize the larger hard
disks. As I said, I CAN make lilo work for linux IF linux hard disk
is on the first IDE channel)
Please please help...
Thank you

The Dell Precision 210 series workstation uses a standard Crystal

don't get any audio. In the process, it disables the beep which doesn't

Subject: Can't get my Soundblaster 16 card to work
Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 21:47:33 GMT
Hello !
After recompiling my kernel several times, I'm stuck. I have a
Creative Labs PnP Soundblaster 16 card. Windows tells me:
IRQ 5
I/O 220h-22Fh
I/O 330h-331h
I/O 388h-38Bh
DMA 1
DMA 5
my hardware analysis program tells me:
Adlib detected, Port 389h
Soundblaster 16, DSP 4.13 detected
Port: 220h, IRQ:5, DMA:1, DMAHIGH: 5, Midi: 330h
Midi-Port: no
The soundblaster values (220, 5, 1, 5) look like standard, but what is
the Adlib ? How should the stuff be configured ? I have SuSE 5.3. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

I would have to agree with mark the NE2000-compatible cards are
good (I have 2 systems on them), also have no problems with the
old 3com 3c509's (3 systems on them), and 2 systems running the
ISA linksys NE2000 compatible card (all you do is turn off PNP on
the linksys card and specify your IRQ and IO). I prefer the old
NIC's, I have better luck with them.
