Who is the manufacturor of your mother board? I understand that while the
AMD processor may be okay, the quality of mother boards for the AMD chip
varies greatly.

This is a sane viewpoint. I labored long and hard to write the `cpuburn`
utilities so I could test my BP6 [overclocked] and have some assurance of
stability. Normal usage doesn't come close.

Here is a stupid suggestion.

In older versions of Linux the distributor fails to make /dev/sdf and
higher in the /dev directory. If sdf-15 available? Maybe you need to
mknod the sdf devices. I'll blame a 5x version of RH for that. Drove
me nuts and sent back two drives to the manufacturer for failure to
recognize those thing. IBM must think I'm an idiot.

I just spent a week downloading Win Linux 2000 on a 56k Win Modem with
constant interuption. I have finaly finished the file and it installed
without problems and detected everything perfectly, except my ATI All In
Wonder Pro. It thought it was just an ATI All In Wonder card. I had to
disable some special hardware from Gateway. (Explain Later) I also had
to
disable my Win Modem, but other than that everything was fine. When I
clicked on Boot Win linux it warned me about restarting in MS-DOS mode
and
it started to boot Linux, but then my monitor blacked out and said "OUT
OF
RANGE". I had to cut the power to get the machine restarted and Windows
keeps trying to bood Win Linux 2000, but I got into Windows and changed
the
settings a few time and finaly got it to boot, but it said my HD had
errors
that only Windows could fix. I did but now it won't boot again.
I appoligise for the long post.
My system is as folows:

Gateway 2000
Destination XTV (Extreme TV)
P II 450 MHz processor
128 MB of ram
31.5 In. Viewable monitor

I have a Dell XPS T500 system with a card that is identified as an "ATI
Rage 128 Pro" under windows 98.

Does anyone know if the "rage 128 pro" card is significantly different
than the "rage 128"?
I have been trying to configure this card under linux/xfree86 3.3.6
which has support for the rage 128 cards but have had no success. The
XF86_SVGA server goes blank with every configuration I've tried. The
XFCom_Rage128 server (from suse) usually just core dumps.

It's DE5620 off www.modemblaster.com I was told it was a USB modem and was t

I don't want to waste $90.00 or a USB external modem when I can buy a non-US

Would it be wise to get the USB one for $90.00?

anything over a 24x is a waste of money anyway since that speed only
comes from part of the cd and not all of it, the rest of the data from
the cd is acquired at a slower speed

Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 22:54:54 -0600

I have a computer with a 30 GB hard drive. The drive is partitioned
into three sections, each roughly 9 GM in size. On the first and second
partition I have Windows NT and 98 installed respectively (for work
purposes *smile*). I wish to install Linux (either RedHat or Debian) on
the last partition.

Can I install Linux on the last section of a 30 GB drive? Will Linux
operate and function normally?

My reason for asking this question is that with Windows NT during
boot-up the Kernel cannot access anything on the primary drive after the
first 2 GB address space -- this is also critical for the Blue Screen of
Death and Core Memory Dumps, etc. I guess this is due to the limitation
of a 16 bit address operating system???

I would appreciate it if you could, in addition replying the the News
group, email me your responses also, please. I am working at a client
site where I do not have readily access to the Internet, USENET, etc.

Thank you.
