My lab has got an offer for :

Intel SC450NX server
4 PII Xeon 450MHz
Built-in SCSI LVDS controller
Mylex AcceleRAID 250 RAID card

The machine specs are impressive, but big question is DOES LINUX RUN ON
THE THING?
I do not want to buy a machine like that and then being forced to
migrate to NT, SCO, or Solaris.

Please reply to me by e-mail too, my news server stinks.

Actually, the new XFree86 3.3.3 server supports Matrox cards, including

Need a real response here for the ppl reading.... I have the ISA version of
your modem. It werks without a hitch. However, I would definitely do what you
said with setserial. I believe that any unix support MultiTech offers should
also work the same on your Linux box; in fact, their tech department does all
its testing in a unix environment (I live 2 blocks from them and have gone
there to talk to them in person). To get the modem working in Win I had to
disable my COM ports in the BIOS and allow the modem to decide which port it
wanted - i.e. jumper settings. I left things exactly the same when I installed
Linux and I have had no problems. Just a suggestion from a (near) newbie.

The issue re SCSI and CDRs is apparently simply that SCSI produces a more even
dataflow, and is generally less likely to suffer a buffer underun. my EIDE
HP7100 was a pain in the b**, but the old HP 6020 and my current traxdata 4260,
both SCSI, are fine. Internal is supposed to be better than external.

OK. NOT all internal pnp modems are Losemodems. My MultiTech MT5634ZPX-ISA is a
pnp and not a losermodem. Same as it is for their PCI model. I'm not saying
that I have the greatest piece of hardware, but that one really has to be
careful when picking up an analog modem.

BTW - since when is $100 for setup and $50 a month affordable for net
access???? I live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where both DSL and cable
modem ISPs live. I can NOT afford to pay these prices for access, in fact, I am
having a hard time switching ISPs from AOL because so many want to charge for
setup. When I find a nice *CHEAP* cable or ADSL service I will be one of the
first in my area to switch to it.

That is only relevant if you have a dos loader in the MBR sector.
All the bios does (or should do) is to load whatever contents are in the
first sector of the first disk and pases control to that piece of code.
And if that piece of code is the LILO loader then nothing will ever look
at the bootable/active flag.

My disks has never ever had dos installed on it and it works fine
without it.

If you write a tape with variable tape block size and try to read that
on a system that is configured for fixed block size, you won't be able
to read anything.

You should check the actual block size on the tape you have made on the
HPUX system, and set your linux tape block size accordingly.

do 'dd if=/dev/st0 bs=100k count=1 | wc -c'

dd should report reading one partial record and the output of wc should
tell you the block size.

Subject: RedHat on a Compaq DeskPro EP/SB Series
Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 06:44:55 -0500

Does anyone have RedHat 5.X running on a Compaq DeskPro EP/SB? I picked one
up cheap over the weekend at a computer show. I installed RedHat but the
systems is not healthy.

It has a PII 300 MHz CPU, 64 MB RAM, ATI Rage IIC AGP video card, 3.2 GB
disk and an Intel EtherExpress 10/100 NIC.

I have it running on a Dell XPS R400 with no problems (not any more at
least). Different video, NIC, memory etc...but everything is running fine.

The problems I have so far are:

1) In the CMOS setup I can set the irq's for the Video, NIC, and USB...I
can even disable them. Depending on the combination...the RedHat won't
install, or after install the keyboard does not work. I have it running now
by only enabling the NIC.

2) I installed the SVGA X-Server. It is working but if I move or re-size a
window...there is a lot of 'static' on the screen. The ATI Mach64 X-Server
does not work. During the setup, the installation program does not probe
the video card.

3) The network is real slow. I can ping OK, but to telnet or FTP takes
about a minute to connect.

4) Each time I install, I select and/or specify everything but I never get
the Apache Web Server on the control panel. The HTTPD starts...but I cannot
seem to hit it.

Thanks.

Personnally I proceed like this :
- no partition table because it is a 230 Mo MO disk (phillips).
(if you want a partition table, run fdisk first)
- choose the filesystem you want to use : generally e2fs or vfat. The
advantage of vfat
is that you can read disks with windoze too.
  run mkfs.ext2 on /dev/sd? ('?' stands for 'a' or 'b' or ... depending
on the SCSI
ID of your MO drive. If you want a vfat filesystem, use superformat,
but you
will need to fiddle with drive parameters (tracks, sectors, etc ...).
Personnally,
I format my vfat MO disks with windoze.
- mount the filesystem (for example on a /mnt/mo directory, which you
create as
  usual).

It works fine for me. You don't need to create the devices. It should be
already
present in your /dev directory.
To guess which /dev/sd? to use, issue a dmesg command. You shoud see
something like
this :
aha152x: trying software interrupt, ok.
scsi0 : Adaptec 152x SCSI driver; $Revision: 1.18 $
scsi : 1 host.
Vendor: SEAGATE Model: ST51080N Rev: 0943
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 5, lun 0

This is for a SEAGATE hard drive but you should see something similar,
except
the type field which indicates "Optical Device" or something like that.
Look at the last line, it says that the device is /dev/sda.

good luck

Eric

As I do in the past, I already installed Linux over a K6, even this K6
seems to be overcocked but it was ok.

I try installing both from floppy and CDROM and try with Redhat from
4.1, 5.1, 5.2. The problems is excatly the same.

I can't remove stuff from the PCs as there are already running W95 and
WinNT workstation, I've no authority to play with the hardware.
There is 1 GB partition free I can use for what I want - installing
Linux, but no chance.

First, read the documentation - its in your kernel source tree at
linux/Documentation/paride.txt . You should also check out the
linux-parport pages at http://www.torque.net/parport/ .

Most likely you would do

        mount /dev/pda1 /mnt/sparq

(depending on your setup). /dev/pd works just like /dev/hd ...
