I have just recently installed Red Hat Linux 6.1 on my computer
and after trying and trying I cannot get my CD-ROM or floppy
drive to mount. Can someone give me any suggestions or ideas?

Subject: Modem ?

Sorry for the third time. But I spent the money to eliminate the use of
windows, and all I was able to do was install a linux os, Caldera 2.3, on my
Compaq Presario. Amazingly Caldera 2.3 was the first linux os out four. The
first three didn't recognize my video card. Caldera found it great.
However now that I am able to use a linux os on my box, I can't get
online with it. I have no clue if my modem is even compatable. Compatablity
lists don't help, as my modem seems to elude these lists. I have heard that
Winmodems don't work with linux. But I don't even know if I have a Winmodem.
Now for the modem questions...
1:How do I setup a Rockwell HCF 56k Data Fax PCI Modem that is on COM2,
Interrupt 11, Address 2F8, Max Speed 115200, Dail bits 8, with Parity, Stop
bits 1 that ,waits for dial tone, cancels after 60 secs, uses FIFO buffer
16550 UART, recieve buffer14, transmitt buffer 16, uses error , compress
data uses flow control, hardware RTS/CTS
2:What is the Caldera equivilent of the above settings in windows?
3:Why do I get no modem, modem is busy messages when trying to find my
modem?
4:When I think I have found my modem, why does it start by saying
Initializing and then nothing happens?
5:Is there a better type of modem to have if this modem continues to not
work with linux? I hate to have spent money not to be able to use linux
online.
6:If this problem is solved by someone, would they be interested in
telling me if my Compaq IJ700 printer will work with linux? I have no clue
how to setup a printer at all.
:o)
All help is great help even if the goal is not met.
Help is good by the nature of it.

What kind of data rates are we talking about, and what processor speed?
If it is a 486 or higher I can't imagine that a 56kbit data rate would
have any impact.

You can find a maintained port of ftape-4.03pre2 for 2.2.x and 2.3.x
kernels at http://www.csd.uu.se/~mikpe/linux/ftape/. I can't speak for
your Iomega Ditto drive, but it works fine with my Seagate TapeStor 3200.

I don't quite know what you mean by "failed ftape files". If you mean
"remnants of failed attempts to add new ftape to kernel", then you'll
want to (a) remove the old kernel source code completely and get a
clean untainted tarball of the kernel source, and (b) remove the
/lib/modules/<bad kernel> hierarchy. You should run a fallback kernel
while you do the upgrade, say a non-modular 2.2.14 on a boot floppy.

I have a RH6.0/486 system w/ an old Specialix IO/8+ multiport card. I
have found and installed the specialix.o module. Judging from the
syslog messages generated when I installed the module, it has found my
hardware and seems to be happy. Where do I do from here in terms of
getting access to the additional ports.....
Under Unixware the pkgadd process created a bunch of nodes under /dev
for accessing the new ttys. This did not seem to happen when I
installed the new module.

Look at any kernel mirror (eg ftp.us.kernel.org), and look around under
people/hedrick. The patch is ide*. There may be ones for different
kernel versions, not sure.
Unzip patch, and place in /usr/src. cd to /usr/src/linux (or wherever
your raw kernel source is) and
patch -p1 < ../ide*
If you would rather use RPM, I am guessing the Redhat's rawhide kernel
has this in there as well. The only way to know for sure is to try it,
or maybe someone else here has.

Next time you have a problem like this, post any error messages you
receive. Since I have no idea which of N things is going wrong in your
case, I have to waste time doing "shotgun troubleshooting."
Anyway, pull up a terminal window or text console, become root, put a
floppy in its drive and a CD-ROM in its drive, and do:
# mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
# mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
Make a note of any errors and post them. Also, remember that RH 6.1 comes
out of the box with (slightly buggy) automounter support. Inserting a
CD-ROM and trying to access /mnt/cdrom should cause the disc to be mounted
automatically.
Take a look at /etc/fstab as well; it should have the lines
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro,user 0 0
somewhere in it.

Though Linux has support for parallel-port IDE devices, you probably don't
want to do this. Parport disks are mind-bogglingly slow, and it's
impossible to boot from a parport disk because of BIOS limitations, so you
would have to install a kernel image and LOADLIN at least on your Win95
partition.
If you're scared of repartitioning your drive, don't be. Shoot, Caldera
2.3 comes with a limited version of Partition Magic that will hold your
hand. If even that's too scary, get PhatLinux or WinLinux or ZipSlack,
distros that run Linux in a UMSDOS filesystem that can live on a WinXX
partition. You'll take a performance hit, but it'll be better than using
a parport disk.
Or just buy another IDE hard drive; $80 will get you at least 4G these
days, and the disk space is nice to have even if you decide not to use
Linux.

Check to see if you have the correct device files first:
# ls -l /dev/ttyX*
If nothing shows up, then you have to create the device files like so:
# mknod /dev/ttyX0 c 32 0
# mknod /dev/ttyX1 c 32 1
# mknod /dev/ttyX2 c 32 2
[...]
Once those exist, you should be able to access those extra ports through
the ttyX[0-7] devices. HTH,

Subject: SCSI Reset with Adaptec AIC-7880 and SMP
Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 15:27:24 GMT
I have a dual processor Micron box with an on-board Adaptec AIC-7880,
which works fine with RH 6.0. I have had no joy however in booting an
SMP kernel.
In all cases with SMP, the system gets as far as probing the SCSI bus
and then goes into an SCSI Reset loop:
...
scsi : 1 host.
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id
0, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 0) timed out - trying harder
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
...
I have tried the RH 6.0 SMP kernel (2.2.5) plus 2.2.10 and 2.2.13
kernels which I have built myself - no joy. I have tried compiling
aic7xxx both as part of the kernel and as a module loaded from initrd.
The system is SCSI based, so booting without SCSI is not an option.
This also means that I can't capture dmesg output.
Any suggestions (no matter how wild) would be appreciated.
Thanks,
T.

It should work fine. It is a real modem, not a braindead winmodem.
Use 'cardctl' to query your pcmcia card(s).
Use 'setserial' to set the IRQ and address params
and
use 'minicom' to try and talk to it. Sendint 'AT'<return> should give you
an 'OK' response.

That is definetely the wrong question.
The Right question is: "Does the Midman manufacturer support Linux ?"
If not, the manufacturer sells trash & junk, so you can burn the
soundcard to have a little bit warm feet. That would be the only
usable option.

Ask Dell!
They say, they support Linux. In that case it's a support/waranty
