Subject: Acceleraid 150 can't see drives

I have a server based on the following hardware:

Tyan Trinity 400
Pentium III 600
256MB ECC PC133
(2) 3Com 3c905
(1) Seagate Cheetah 9 LVD
(5) Seagate Cheetah 18 LVD
Mylex Acceleraid 150 controller
Generic SIS 8MB AGP video

All of the drives are mounted in Kingston DE100I-SWCU2/B hot swap trays.

The 5 Cheetah 18GB drives are in an external drive case. I've configured
the Mylex drive to create a striped volume of the five drives. When I
attempt to install any version of Linux (RedHat 6.2, Mandrake 7.1,
Slackware, etc.), at some point during the file copy operation (never the
same point), the system stops responding and I have to reboot. Then the
controller marks drive 0 (the internal 9GB drive) as dead and I have to run
the DOS-based configuration program to reactivate the drive.

The internal SCSI chain is terminated with an active LVD terminator. The
external chain is terminated similarly with an external terminator. There
is no option on the controller to change termination. The cables are good.

If I connect all of the drives to either the internal or the external
connector, they work correctly. The problem only occurs when the drives are
connected with the controller in the middle of the chain.

As an experiment, I also tried installing Windows 2000 Server. The same
thing happened. Obviously it's not a software problem. It sounds very much
like a termination problem, but I can't see where it might be.

The drives are hardwired to provide termination power. They have no
termination of their own. Swapping drives has no effect.

I'm stumped. Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,

Drew Dunn

I can install Linux (RH 6.2) okay, but when I go to load it, the kernel
says something about disabling CPUID serial numbers, which causes a HUGE
FAULT to freeze the computer. Any suggestions? Please email me directly as
it's difficult for me to use PINE to do newsgroup searches.

The intel 100b? Are we talking the EISA bus card or at least a machine that that
has an EISA bus included? Are the cards PCI? IF you have an EISA bus use the
boot configuration utility to re-distribute your resources appropriately (yes
even though PCI cards can control these themselves the other resources will
fight until the utility is run and calm is felt upon the land...er machine ;-))
It looks like the eisa/pci card has grabbed a resource but then something else
is fighting with it. If you ever move a card you must again run the config
utility (this utility configs your BIOS and should come with the machine itself.

If this is useless babble please goto your BIOS and set the resources manually
if possible.
I hope this works but other than that your printout looks normal (I'mm running
intel express pro 100 x2 in an eisa/pci/isa bus machine and they use the the
same modules and teh readout is the same as yours.
Good luck!

It is installed in a NuBUs expansion card and would be installed into the PDS
Slot located at the back left of the machine. THe adaptor card used for this
ddevice containds the FPU and frees the slot as a pass through connector. In
accelerated option, the FPU is built on to the new CPU card that is attached to
the PDS Slot and provides two slots, on for the accelerator and one for PDQ

So does this mean that modules are not loaded when needed, only removed
when not needed? Doesn't this defeat the purpose of modules?

(it's version 1.1) the problem was gone.

As /dev/fd0 LS120 is not found by Linux, only as IDE /dev/hdx. Then insert
diskette and mount it.
If you use mtools, then describe A: in mtools.conf rightly - as /dev/hdx
(not /dev/fd0).

OK I've just found out that the new BT ADSL service uses USB for it's
connection. If you want an ethernet-enabled box, that's a 100/month
line rental as opposed to 40 which is typical BT crap seeing as you're
paying through the nose for the same bandwidth but for their royal
permisson to attach more than one comp to theservice. Does anyone
know if it's possible to use this USB ADSL modem under Linux, i.e. to
have a bt0 interfaceor something?

Try this:
modprobe sound dmabuf=1
modprobe cs4232 irq=5 io=0x534 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=9
modprobe opl3 io=0x388

Works on a Thinkpad 380D and a Dell Optiplex GX1, both of which have
CS42xx chips in them. Try io=0x530 on the cs4232 if the 0x534 gives
errors. Put those commands into /etc/rc.d/rc.local if they work.

BTW, don't crosspost so flagrantly, and disable whatever godawful
"feature" your newsreader is using that makes it send MIME messages.
