When I try to install Red Hat linux 6.1 (that I got with the Red Hat
Linux Bible - Negus) I get the following error on the install:
fatal error: no screens found
and then the install aborts, and then the runtime error: cannot open
display
I have Gateway vx900 monitor on a ATI Rage 128 16 meg AGP card. This is
my first time installing linux, so I'm a newbie, any help would be
greatly appreciate it.

I should have said: ALSO, the rtl8139 driver doesn't appear to work wth
the HP1270-D TX card.... That has nothing to do with the graphics, it's
just an additional problem...
Thanks for you patience,

Subject: EXT2-fs error w/ IBM 20GB drive
Date: 18 Mar 2000 20:32:27 GMT
Hey folks. I'm running kernel 2.2.14, and I've just installed a new IBM
20GB hard drive. It's model number DPTA-372050. My system's currently
on a 2GB Samsung mounted as /dev/hda. The IBM was to be /dev/hdb. I've
got a really old mboard and BIOS, so it sees the drive as being only
8GB, but Linux sees the right size. I read the Large Disk HOWTO, and I
didn't foresee any difficulties moving my system to the new drive.
Here's the problem. I can fdisk the new drive fine. I made a small
boot partition of 75MB, a large middle partition of 15GB, and a smaller
5GB at the end in case I want to install another OS later. I can also
mke2fs these partitions with (seemingly) no problem. E2fsck after the
mke2fs reports nothing wrong.
However, when I go to mount the middle partition, I'm flooded with
errors such as "EXT2-fs error: Wrong free inode count in group ...".
There are a ton of them, dumped into the logs and on console. I can
then copy material over to the new drive, but at some point it decides
that it's full--despite df displaying many gigs remaining.
So how can I manage to use my new drive? Would a 2.3.x series kernel
help? I've searched dozens of linux sites and found nothing that tells
me how to overcome this. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
DAW

Well, I recompiled the kernel enabling SCSI emulation. However, it
may be that that's not so easy with Corel Linux.

What do you get in /var/log/messages (or whatever the equivalent is

I had this kind of problem when I enabled "PS/2 support" in the BIOS.
You can verify that it's set to AUTO or DISBLED.

RH 6.1 shipped with Xfree86 3.3.5, which does not support the Rage 128.
Xfree86 3.3.6 does. You need to install RH 6.1 in text mode, which
shouldn't be too hard, get Xfree86 3.3.6, and then run XF86Setup or
Xconfigurator to get your video card recognized and happy. Consult the
book you have for details on installing in text mode. As for Xfree86
3.3.6, check out the URLs below.

Mandrake 7.0 shipped with Xfree86 3.3.6 if this is all too complex :-)
You can get it at cheapbytes.com for less than $10.

There is some wonderful reading in:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.SiS
In particular... look at the 'Options' available for the card
btw... I have SiS 620 - not exactly the same... but I'm sure I've had
similar experiences with it. On *my* system... I can get 24 bpp... but the
acceleration is best under 16 bpp. Since I don't have a bionic eye :) - 16
bpp is quite adequate for color depth.

Very curious.

Here's an update on my P5AB/CMI8330 situation:
I've compiled the following:
Sound Card Support = M
OSS sound modules = M
MSS support = M
MPU-401 = M
100% SB compatible = M
FM synth (OPL-3) = M
In kernel 2.2.14. I then added the following lines to /etc/conf.modules
according to the advice of someone who has posted about getting sound to
work with the CMI8330/P5AB combo before:
post-install sound modprobe -k sb
alias midi uart401
options sb io=0x220 dma=1 dma16=5 irq=5 mpu io=0x330
these options are straight out of the P5AB motherboard manual. I
checked /proc/interrupts, dma, ioports etc and found nothing to conflict
with these settings.
The problem is that even though /dev/dsp exists, I get 'no such device'
when I attempt to use it (I've tried wavplay, and even catting a file
into it). The hell? Here's the ls -l:
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 Mar 8 15:00 dsp
MAKEDEV dsp fails, amd MAKEDEV update seems to get stuck in a loop
saying 'don't know what "nbd" is'. Ack!
Also, I didn't see anything new appear in the various /proc files, I
dunno if that is supposed to happen or not with modules though.

Subject: 3Com 3C900: skbuff address problem
Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 22:29:10 +0100
Dear Linux users
Recently, I migrated my telephone connection from analog to ISDN. With that
I replaced my external analog modem with an internal ISDN card: ELSA
Microlink ISDN PCI, and in the same step, I upgraded S.u.S.E. Linux from 5.2
(Kernel V2.0.33) to 6.2 (Kernel V2.2.10). This Linux box contains a Gigabyte
GA486AM mainboard (486DX2/66 MHz) and a 3Com 3C900 Combo network card, known
as "boomerang". This system is used as a NAT router using IP masquerading.
Since that migration I have a strange problem: In general, the network and
the ISDN connection to my ISP work correctly, but sometimes, the system
suddently crashes completely :-( A "ping" command from another station does
not give an answer and the local console keyboard is also completely "dead"
especially Ctrl+Alt+Del (magic key for "shutdown") doesn't also react, only
the reset button on the main unit's housing itself "wakes" up my system.
After that reboot (takes a while because of fsck's tidy up process) I find
the following messages in /var/log/warn as the system's latest syslogd
entries before the crash:
Mar 13 11:03:21 asi486 kernel: Warning: kfree_skb passed an skb still on a

Mar 18 14:42:28 asi486 kernel: eth0: Warning -- the skbuff addresses do not
match in boomerang_rx: c5264012 vs. c5265012.
Each of these crashes always happened when I was online (ISDN connection
active) and there's traffic between a client station inside my LAN and the
Internet.
My questions:
- Does perhaps Kernel 2.2.10 have any known bugs in the vortex driver or in
the HiSaX driver?
- Or may it be that my 486 mainboard (a Gigabyte GA486AM) is buggy, so I
should disable every kind of PCI bus speed up feature like "PCI burst write"
and so on in the BIOS setup?
Note that there's also an older SCSI controller (NCR 53c825) onboard (It
*only* works with the older driver [NCR 53c7,8xx] instead of the newer BSD's
one) if that one may have a negative influence on the PCI bus (there I also
get the message "<4>scsi0: REQ before WAIT DISCONNECT IID" during startup).
For additional help, here the hardware modprobing dialog during boot

I had the same problem using an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 AGP (same chipset). You
need to have XFree86 version 3.3.6 or version 4 ( I used v4), the version
supplied with RH6.1 is 3.3.5 and that doesn't work. You can get a new version
from XFree86.org when you install it you then need to run xf86config. You'll
probably find that it still doesn't work. You need to edit the
/etc/X11/XF86Config file. When you look at it you will find the graphics card
driver installed by xf86config. You need to edit it so that the driver is
"r128" instaead of "svga". The X server should then owrk after you re-boot.
NB you can edit the file by running emacs on the command line even if X isn't
working.
Good luck!

I have the same card and CD in my 486 - and the same problem.
My solution - download debian base files, copy to floppy, and install
debian from the net (cablemodem is great!).
You can use my solution, or replace the kernel on the RH install floppies
with a kernel compiled with correct drivers for your system.
BTW - I still can't get sound to work on this card, and have had problems
with SMC NIC drivers. It seems that newer versions of the kernel,
drivers, and other packages no longer support the systems they
started out on. maybe it's time for a "Legacy Linux" distribution.

Subject: STB PCI tv tuner with bttv
Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 16:09:37 -0600
hi!
I just got a STB PCI that has a TDA9850 stereo decoder.
the bttv driver found the card perfectly, and detected the TDA9850
except there is no sound coming out. seems like the card is in a
mute state. any suggestion on this? I am using 2.2.14
thanks
