Hello,

who owns a CDD2000 and is able to execute

    cdrecord -msinfo dev=0,1,0

to burn for a second, third, .. time?

I've got CDD2000 and no multi-session is
possible. First time I'm burning with

   cdrecord -v -speed=2 dev=0,1,0 -multi /tmp/image

but when trying to eval msinfo:

rex:~ # cdrecord -msinfo dev=0,1,0
cdrecord: Input/output error. test unit ready: scsi sendcmd: retryable error

I tried it for three different CD types.

Any ideas?

Try Mandrake 7.2, that will make it a lot easier to install Linux with this
Mobo.

2.4 supports the hpt370, but unfortunately, you will need to install a
linux distro *before* you upgrade the kernel. Unless you have the patience
to wait for a distro with a 2.4.x kernel :)

Better still get the correct kernel etc from dell.

can't remember exact url, but the file is available for download.

file name is rh62erk1.zip - contains required files and docs. ( word format )

i've used it on several poweredges.

In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Walter Francis
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes

I have a nice combined USB SmartMedia/CF1/2 (but not microdrive) reader
which works fine under Linux without any proprietary drivers...

...unfortunately it comes with a built-in Olympus E10 digicam which
makes it a rather uneconomical solution :-)

The point is, though, that some USB devices implement a standard
"storage class" protocol which just show up as pseudo-SCSI devices using
just the "usb-storage.o" module. With the E10, it was just a case of
plugging it in, creating /mnt/camera and adding:

/mnt/camera /mnt/camera supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/sda1 0 0

...to fstab.

So if you have the chance to try a USB card reader (or camera) with
Linux, its worth a try, even if you don't have a specific driver.

You can probably make an educated guess if you see the magic words
"storage class" when installing the Windows drivers. Why the fsck
Windoze needs a driver disk for every last USB device I don't know.

One more favour please. I'd given up hope on getting a Dell with a
Yamaha YMF-724F [DS-1 Audio Controller] working. It looks like the
sound module is ymfsb.o, but the source code is ymf_sb.c (note the
underbar character). Between the parameters I found in ymf_sb.c and the
settings when the Dell was booted in Windows, I came up with a command
line like so.

rmmod ymfsb
modprobe ymfsb dma=1 io=0x220 mpu_io=0x330 synth_io=388 spdif_out=1

  That errored out. However...

modprobe ymfsb dma=1 io=0x220 mpu_io=0x330

Returned a success message. Then I could do the long line above, with
any sort of garbage numbers I wanted for "synth_io" and "spdif_out".
Regardless, of what I do, here's what I get when trying to play an mp3
using mpg123...

If I pound away furiously at {CTRL-C}, I can save the session.
Otherwise, the system locks up solid. Power-down re-boot needed.
Has *ANYBODY* got their YMF-724F working under linux?

I've managed to get one of those things going, but it takes a bit of
hand-holding of linux...

Step 1) log on as root and execute...
  cat /proc/pci > listing
...(at least in Redhat, hopefully also in Mandrake)

Step 2) view "listing" with a text editor or viewer. Somewhere in
the output, you will see reference to "Unknown serial controller".
It will also list the IRQ and I/O addresses used by the device.

  Step 3) man setserial
and execute setserial with the appropriate port and IRQ values
  obtained in step 2) above

Step 4) Try dialing out to your ISP. If the modem works, enter the
the successful setserial commandline as the last line of
/etc/rc.d/rc.local (or equivalent startup script in Mandrake).

Subject: SB Live! Value PCI
Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 13:30:26 +0100

Hi,

I'm running kernek 2.2.17 and I can't make my sound card (Sound Blaster
Live! Value PCI) work correctly.
Any help would be appreciated :-)

When I make a "cat /usr/X11R6/lib/GNUstep/Apps/WMMail.app/Sounds/NewMail.au
> /dev/audio" I can hardly hear a very bad quality sound with a lot of
noise.

Dmesg tells me the following:

    Creative EMU10K1 PCI Audio Driver, version 0.6, 13:20:10 Oct 5 2000
    emu10k1: EMU10K1 rev 5 model 0x02 found, IO at 0xc400-0c41f, IRQ 10

that is really good! But when I try "cat /dev/sndstat" it answers me "No
such device".

Looking in /etc/isapnp.gone I found:

#
# sound
#
#IO 0x220,16
#IO 0x330, 2
#IO 388,4
#IRQ 5
#DMA 1
#DMA 5

which are the good settings of my sound card (same as under Windows98).

What is more, looking in /etc/sysconfig/hwconf:

class: AUDIO
bus: PCI
detached: 0
driver: emu10k1
desc: "Creative Labs|SB Live! (audio)"
vendorId: 1102
deviceId:0002
subVendorId: 1102
subDeviceId: 0020
pciType: 1

Everythings seems good and I feel very close to the solution but I'm
stuck...

For instance xmms 1.2.3 tells me the following when I try to play an mp3
file:

    Couldn't open audio
    Please check that:
    1. You have the correct output plugin selected
    2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard
    3. Your soundcard is configured properly

Any idea of how to make everything fit together?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards, Grald.

<snip - see previous message>

I changed the location of the "port_monitor" to 0x158 and reflected
the changes on the serial card, so there is no longer a conflict between
the last serial port and the interrupt status register. An over sight
on my part.

The card now appears to work correctly for the first four serial ports,
as I now get the following printed to the console:

rs port monitor (single) irq 5: 0xff, 0xff

when one serial port is in use. And this when more than one serial
port is in use:

rs port monitor irq 5: 0x0 (or 0x1 etc.), 0xff

However the four serial ports using IRQ 4 the following is printed
to the console:

with one serial port in use:

rs port monitor (single) irq 4: 0xff, 0xff

and with more than one serial port (ttyS9 to ttyS12) in use

        rs port monitor irq 4: 0xff, 0xff

Is this the way it is supposed to work ?

Subject: Lilo with HPT366 UDMA 66
Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 13:59:13 +0100

Hi,

I'm running a 2.2.17 kernel on UDMA disks and I can't make Lilo run
properly.
Here is the config:

Motherboard Abit BE6 with latest BIOS (TH)

UDMA 33 (ide0): Cd-rom (e:) + Iomega Zip 100 (f:)
                    (ide1): no disk

UDMA 66 (ide2): Western Digital 10 GB with Windows98 mounted as hde1 in
/mnt/win1 i.e. c: (default install from the vendor of my PC)
+ Seagate 40 GB partitioned as follows: (added
by myself)

                            hdf1 (primary): 20MB ext2fs mounted as /boot
with vmlinuz
                            hdf2 (primary): 256MB swap
                            hdf3 (primary): 9GB windows98 vfat (fat32)
mounted as /mnt/win2 i.e. d:
                            hdf4 (primary):
                                hdf5 (extended): 15GB ext2fs mounted as
/home
                                hdf6 (extended): 15GB ext2fs mounted as /

                    (ide3): no disk

Booting from a floppy for Linux is OK as well as booting in W98 by default
directly from hde1.

First of all Lilo failed to install from command line. Only DrakeConf (Linux
Mandrake distrib) managed to do it (I don't know how...)

In lilo.conf there are 4 ways to boot in:

    vmlinuz hdf1
failsafe with vmlinuz (level 1) hdf1
    windows hde1
    floppy fd0

When booting, only vmlinuz is available from lilo and mounting hde1 fails
saying:
"damage blocks or too many file systems mounted"

No more windows (only "Lil" displayed). Making a fdisk /mbr under a DOS
floppy fails saying the mbr was not updated. Only lilo -u works:
this means that the hde1 boot sector is not reachable either from DOS nor
from lilo.

Any idea on how to boot correctly from lilo?
Remember though that I can boot into Linux with a floppy and directly into
Windows from the disk after uninstalling lilo but booting from the floppy is
too slow and if I forget to insert it I'm under Windows by default: I really
would like to be able to choose from lilo at startup... :-)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards, Grald.

Hello,

I have a problem with getting the onboard 3com 3c920 network adapter to
work. The nic is situated on an ASUS CUSL2 motherboard.
The problem is that the IRQ of the network adapter is set to 0 so I can't
get Linux to work with it.
Would there be anyone on this planet with a good idea to get this hardware
doing what it's supposed to do?

I have about the same problem with the onboard Intel 82559 nic on a ASUS
