DG, thank you so very much for such a thorough response. After trying both
of the zip files, I discovered that they both require kernel v. 2.2.12.
Since I have v. 2.2.10, I have gotten sidetracked and very bogged down into
trying to learn how to upgrade/recompile my kernel. It seems like everything
I read gives a different approach. Oh well, for the time when I do get
through all of this, I do have a followup question in response to your
response. See below....

Do you disable the plug and play from the setup screens you can access when
the computer boots up, or do you disable them from within Linux? If you do
from the setup screens, which is what it sounds like, do you have to change
them back each time you use Windows? If this is the issue you are raising
above, please forgive my ignorance.

LinkSys EtherFast 32-bit Auto 10/100 Cardbus PC (Credit Card) works well for me
(I did have to rebuild the pcmcia drivers to get cardbus support compiled in).
Micro Warehouse lists it for $69. You might want to get the new integrated
version (same price) that integrates the ethernet RJ45 plug into the card,
rather than having a short cord that plugs into the card (assuming you don't
mind using it in your top pcmcia slot).

What's the chipset on the card? (You said the brand name, not the
chipset. There's a huge difference.) If this is more than a year old,
you have an excellent chance of it working, and I'm sure the thing will
run in VGA (640x480, 16 color) no matter what. HTH,

I am guessing that the ones shiped over the next few weeks will be able to
be modified as posted on the net. If they make minor changes we will just
have to make minor changes to our modification. Go for it and order a gray
by phone. This should give you the fastest shipping date. Good luck!

I'm using an Intel XXpress server motherboard that has an aic-7870
controller onboard. I want to use the 2940U2W controller, but I cant get
Linux installed. The installation freezes at "Loading aic-7xxx driver".
The CD-ROM and hard drive access lights flash and nothing else happens.
When I pull the 2940U2W out and throw an old SCSI-2 hard drive onto the
onboard 7870, I don't have any problem.
If any body knows how to disable the onboard controller (disabling "Scan
onboard Bios" does'nt help) or make them live together nicely, I'd be a
happy camper again.
I suspect they're both trying to use IRQ 10. msd reports that 10 is
"reserved" and I know that the 2940U2W is using it.

The problem is that I can get so few information about the cards,
that I would be happy if at least the pixel resolution would be
displayed on the product.

I already did similar stuff with the camera, and I was satisfied with
the result. That time I used a parallax card and a sun workstation.

Now what I can find in the stores is a cheap Taiwan made card.
It has a name TVExcel (I assume not much better than noname),
and not too many documentation.
It is based on BT878 (or maybe BT848 ).
And a SKYWELL MagicTV Decoder/Capture card, which again is based on
BT878, and again I don't have much more info about them.
(I could also find a Hauppauge model, but that was USB and I only have
PCI)
Now I'm getting closer to deciding which card to buy.
Do you maybe know what is the difference between BT878 and 848 ?
Is there a signifficant diference at all?

Your help is very-very usefull to me!

USB is not in the main kernel yet, so if you want to use it in USB mode, you will have
to do some work. Check out:
http://www.linux-usb.org/
You will need the USB backport to use USB on 2.2 kernel:
http://www.suse.cz/development/usb-backport/
Then follow the guide to get your mouse working:
http://linuxusbguide.sourceforge.net/USB-guide-1.0.5/book1.html
May not be worth the effort to you, you should have a PS/2 adapter with your mouse,
try that.

Currently there are no drivers to take advantage of this using the Live. Creative is

On the other hand, just because it's not supported doesn't mean it won't
work. I have a Xircom CE3-10/100 Fast Ethernet card, which wouldn't work
with the stock RH 6.1 kernel (2.2.12). Upgrading the kernel to 2.3.46
fixed the problem (Xircom support got broken again in 2.3.99pre1, although
I think it's working now in 2.3.99pre3, which I haven't tried yet).
