When I try to setup XFree86 with my GeForce MX card, it ssys I has a
GeForce 256. Are all the GeForce card compatible with each other in Linux
or should I wait till someone makes a GeForce MX driver?

According to my data, it works with the hl1250 driver included in
Ghostscript 6 and newer, or available separately for inclusion in GPL
Ghostcript.

See http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=261673

Doubtless. However, I have a number of reports that this printer's
2MB memory is not enough, and that it cannot be extended. Thus I do
not recommend this printer to people. The 1250 (adds a SIMM slot),
and especially the 1260 (adds Postscript) and 1270N (adds Ethernet),
however, are all gloriously Linux compatible devices.

Ghostscript's ljet4 driver should drive this printer at 600dpi, and
the pxlmono driver may be the way to get 1200dpi.

See http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=64096

In the future, look before you leap; especially in the printer market
it is easy to end up with unsupported, or unsupportable hardware...

Ah, yes, that was my goof; I since fixed it.

More importantly, the new location for Matt's website has turned up;
cdj880 now lives at http://www.gelhaus.net/hp880c/ . I of course
mailed this to everyone who had asked me directly, and updated the
link in the database.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming ;)

Indeed. _The_ choice in properly working color inkjets for free
software users is Epson. No other line is supported at all well.

Furthermore, no driver besides the gimp-print/stp driver contains
really good dithering code. This driver contains support for many
Epson, Canon, and HP printers, but only the Epson support is
functionally competetive with the vendor's Windows software.

The moment HP, Canon, Lexmark, and others start cooperating, the
situation will change. But until then, it's Epson.

Hmm. You don't state that you obtained and install the stp driver
itself. Did you do so? This would involve either recompiling
Ghostscript, or perhaps installing a different Ghostscript package
provided by the stp/gimp-print folks, if they offer one.

Check that the stp driver is on your system by examining the output of
`gs -help'; if stp is not a listed driver, then you must still do that
step.

Hi! Sounds like your system is OK to me :) The swap space can often remain
after apps using it are closed. This is perfectly normal, and does not
impair performance, as far as I know.

Sounds like heat was the problem there... And it looks like you did it

If there isn't a fan blowing across the hard drives, which do make a
fair amount of heat, it wouldn't hurt to put one it to keep them cool.

Just my two cents.

I have installed a new network card (NIC) on a linux machine. The idea is to

do I install the drive routines for the new card (say interface eth1) and

As you say, depends on RAM. I tried some X11 on a P133 w/ 16MB, which
was quite unusable. By now that notebook has 48MB, and it's ok (no
desktop, though, just plain AfterStep in my case). With this much RAM
I can even do some Perl/MySQL development while using Netscape as
browser without this becoming too much of a pain.
In 16MB, I'd consider Perl/MySQL/w3m (vim as editor in any case ;-))
to be ok, but better leave out X11.

[Note: I'm used to Athlon 800/256MB by now, and do serious development,
so maybe I just have high standards ;-)]

What is in your XF86Config file? I have a PS2 Logitech Mouse Man Marble
Plus (with wheel). In the Section "Pointer"

Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"
Buttons 5
ZAxisMapping 4 5

(see the manual page for XF86Config for the Pointer section)

(explanation: IntelliMouse PS/2 driver on the Protocol line.
              /dev/psaux is the PS/2 port.
Two main buttons. Pressing down the wheel is the third
                                button. Moving the wheel forward/back
activates the switches for buttons 4/5.
Buttons 4/5 used for movement (in some direction other
                                than X,Y))

(if you have a serial mouse or something, yours will be different - but
generally you want the IntelliMouse with wheel)

Pressing the wheel should work as the third button.

Some programmes work with the wheel. Many don't.

imwheel is a patch programme which can convert wheel motion to up/down
keypresses (and SHIFT wheel motion to up/down-PAGE presses, etc. - it can
be configured differently for different programmes).

See the manual page for imwheel.

The configuration file should be (well, on my system, but yours may be
different) at /etc/imwheelrc

My .xinitrc file has the line:

/usr/X11/bin/imwheel

(which I added) to use imwheel (IntelliMouse wheel driver).

(for some programmes, you can configure them separately to use the wheel
and tell imwheel not to make conversions for those programmes in imwheelrc
- or you can just let imwheel do the conversion)

The VX chipset can't cache more than 64MB of memory, so you should see a big
speed up if you remove 2 of those SIMMS. Linux sticks the kernel in the top
of memory, which is the part that isn't getting cached.

You could buy a faster CPU somewhere like ebay, as you're not going to find
many socket-7 CPUs new. Depending on what voltages your motherboard can
supply, and what bus speeds it can do, you might be able to use a pentium MMX,
K6, K6-II, K6-III, or Cyrix M2. Or you might just be stuck with a Pentium 200
as the fastest CPU you can get. There are also various "upgrade" CPUs you can
get, based on a centaur C6 or some other chip, that are designed for older
motherboards that won't work with modern socket 7 CPUs. If you can do it,
a K6-III 450 would make your system quite a bit faster.

Other than that, your system is un-upgradable. Any new motherboard will take
DIMMs, so your SIMMS are useless. There is no point in keeping your old video
card when you can get a new AGP card that is much faster for less than $100.
Any new motherboard will also be ATX form factor, so if you have an AT case,
and that would be the standard for you're vintage components, you can't even
keep the case. You're better off buying a complete system, as you'll get a
better price this way than if you buy parts.
