Muahahaha!
I think that the problem with books about Linux is that the subject is
changing far to fast for most books being useful for more than one or
two years. At least newbies should read first the users' guide and
then most howtos and then they should ask around to borrow some really
good books which will last for twenty years or more. They are
recommended in various reading lists which are floating around.
But from someone who doesn't respect the basic rules for the usenet I
wouldn't even dream to expect that he has grasped enough Unix and
network culture to sell ONE good book about Linux.

The option you should check in the SCSI BIOS is "Extended BIOS Translation
for DOS Drives > 1G" under "Advanced Configuration Options." It should be
enabled. This is what was causing my problems with identical symptoms -- I
assumed Linux didn't need it. (In fact, Linux doesn't -- LILO does. This
option makes no difference once Linux has loaded.)

Here is quick start tips from someone who has chased the problems:
Avoid the HPT UDMA66 controller. IDE seems fine with late model kernels
(>=2.2.14) at UDMA33. Get the board stable first, then try this if you
want.
Get good quality components, especially PS (300W?). Extra cooling too.
If using X, flash to QQ Beta BIOS. There is definitely something fixed
with this BIOS. I guarantee this has solved a serious problem for me.
Note that running a server without X, seems a much better out of the box
setup, ie less likely to lock. SCSI also seems less problematic.
Turn off all Power management in BIOS (OK if compiled in kernel).
'noapic' boot option helps for some people. This gives you all IRQs on
one process, but has very little performance hit.
Do NOT OC until you know you are stable. This is tempting since the
BIOS makes it so easy.
Check the owners manual for which slots share which IRQs. This is
sometimes a source of problems.
MPS 1.1 vs 1.4 makes no difference IMO. (BIOS setting)
If running high load apps like SETI, put heat compound and maybe a fan
on the BX chip. Gets real hot under prolonged load.

After searching Redhat's hardware compatibility list, I found the

I have an old Prometheus 14.4 Modem ISA Card and I would like to set it up

it isnt. I hope its not an ISA-Winmodem which is why I cannot initialize it.
I
am not able to send AT commands to it through minicom because I dont know
what
the AT commands are for this modem and minicom does not show what I type on
the screen. Any past experiences, advise, suggestions ? I have only recently
started using modems on linux and I am not sure if I am doing it right...

You may want to look into the "CUPS" printing system.
When you try to "lpr text.txt" as root, you still got the "bash:
/home/dressel/.bashrc: Permission denied" error? This seems to me to
indicate that you executed the "su" command to obtain root access. When
you "su" it doesn't completely re-write your environment variables and
therefore is still acting as if it were you logged in.
You should be able to "chmod 700 .bashrc" from /home/dressel to get rid
of that error. If you don't have a .bashrc file in /home/dressel, then
you must not use "bash" as your shell..??
??

I've done quite a few linux installs, and never once has X been set up
correctly. You'll have to go into /etc/X11/XF86Config and fix things by
hand. The "Screen" section is at or near the end of the file.
To fix it by hand, you'll need to know the format of the file. Try 'man
XF86Config' for the gory details. The part you probably want to edit or
add is the "accel" accelerated server.

My Linux system has no working sound at present (e.g. CDs). Running
sndconfig, all goes well until I get to the bit where it plays a sound
sample. I've tried several configurations: in some cases I can't hear
the sound, so I guess in these cases I've got it configured wrong. In
other cases I still don't hear any sound but get a message like:
Modprobe error:
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/cs4232.0:
init module: Device or resource busy
uart401: Device or resource busy
which may as well be Greek to me. It's RH6.1 on a Toshiba Satellite. Any
suggestions?

RedHat 6.1 misconfigures the parport modules. If printtool can't detect
anything at /dev/lp0,1 or 2, then you probably need to add:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
to your /etc/conf.modules file.
Try running printtool again, then select the driver that looks most like
your printer.

Try setting the parallel port in your BIOS setup screen to EPP or
Bi-Directional. If that doesn't work or you need ECP, don't set it to
"auto", instead specify the IRQ, port, and/or DMA. Remember these
settings and type them in the conf.modules as:
options parport_pc irq=# io=0x### dma=#
(replace the #'s with the values you set up in the BIOS)
