I took the easy way out & downloaded the Scitech Display Doctor. I tried
for 3 or 4 days to get my system to run before SDD. SDD took about 3
minutes and it works.

Subject: Riva TNT
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 22:47:48 -0800
Hi,
I just got linux slackware 3.6 the other day. And now trying to set up X for
the 5th day. I have Clabs Riva TNT AGP 16mb card.
I installed X 3.3.3.1, selected Riva TNT from the card list, select modes,
monitor refresh rates, I tried em all... nothing works.
I tried selecting Riva 128 instead of TNT still XF86Setup either jumps to
text mode after i press done, and gives me errno 111. Wich i think might be
accuring because it can't find config file... It doesn't seem to create it
unless i don't specify any resolution, then it does. Next time i go to
XF86Setup and try to change res, it won't save config. (This is entirely my
theory i don't really know).
After i finish XF86Setup without settin my resolution it will display screen
with text runnin over the display limit saying 'You have successfully .... '
so i can't read the rest. I can also see half of the button saying 'okay'...
Basically i see top left 1/4 of the screen, everything else is over the
screen limits.
When i start up X (without setting res previously otherwise it will give me
errno 111) it will run same way... with only top left 1/4 of display on
screen.
I tried going to config file and manually settin everything to higher
resolutuons, and startX, it still ignores it.
I was told to use XF86Configure on efnets #linux.
I can't find /usr/X11R6/XF86Configure... its not there, even though i did
the default install of SlackWare.
Could someone pls help me out with this or send me their config file if u
have nVidia TNT.
I am completely lost and frustraited... thanks in advance

The stock RH5.2 kernel supports the Ensoniq AudioPCI 1370 (and
hence, should support the SB64/128). However, the drivers aren't particularly
good (I had some problems with warbly/distorted .au files and RealPlayer),
so using either ALSA or kernel 2.2.x is advised (by me, FWIW).

Because the price/performance is better? DU costs money. NT costs
money. Digital Fortran costs money. Do the math and see how it works

Yes, it's rather bizarre. All I can suggest is that it is entirely
possible, though generally pointless, to make an ext2 file system that
is smaller than the partition it resides on. You can do this by giving
'mke2fs' an explicit block count. You can also get a similar effect by
'dd'-ing a file system from a small partition to a larger one. Perhaps
whoever created the file system thought that 'fdisk' was reporting a
sector count and that 'mke2fs' needed to be told a count that was half
that number.
I presume you are also aware that you currently appear to have only
about 35% of the space on this 9 GB disk allocated to partitions.

mkdir /mnt/disk
and then try mounting the drive.

Ok, thanks everyone for all the help so far.
Just one last (I hope :-) question.
Is the Sound Blaster Live compatible with old Sound Blasters. i.e. Could I
use it as if it was e.g. a sound blaster 16.
If not, could someone recommend a cheap (my budget is about 50 UK pounds)
sound card that will give me good sound quality.
I'll be using it for producing sound effects for plays, so I want a very
clean sound output.
With luck, I'll be able to order the parts sometime tonight.
Thanks everyone...
