Hi all,

I have an ati rage PRO video card and I was unable to install mandrake 7.0
and have an x server running. I belive that linux was installed, but there

know if the ati rage pro card is supported in 7.1? I have the PRO version of
the card which apparently is quite different from simply ati rage 128.

I have been unable to get linux running on my new machine...and I MISS MY

The modem should work with a converter, I'm not sure though. Just try, those

It is my understanding that the Mach 64 driver supports the Rage PRO. It is
listed on the supported hardware list right after the Rage IIC -- which I have.

ATI Mach64 3D Rage IIC ................................. XF86_Mach64
ATI Mach64 3D Rage Pro ................................. XF86_Mach64

If the installation program didn't do the job. Try running XF86Setup or
xf86config (as root). If you are using XF86 3.x.x, you should first see that
the "XF86-Mach64" driver has been installed.

The 'Driver home page' link points to the home page fo the driver,
which is where you can find the source. The stp driver for
Ghostscript is distributed as part of the Gimp-print package.

In short, you can find it at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/

Subject: Can't write to Zip on Net
Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2000 17:50:20 -0400

Greetings -

Help - I need a clue, folks!

in brief:

-Linux box (Mandrake 7.0) on NT/W9x network.

-Zip100 parallel on Linux box -
       works locally (using vfat disks)

-Linux HD (ext2) partition on same Linux box
is published (Samba) on the net and accessable
(read & write) to all the NT/W9x machines -
       this works fine.

-tried to put the Zip drive on the net, and it can
be read, but no-one can write to it.

Current Samba:

  [Zip]
comment = HyperTux Zip 100 drive
          path = /mnt/zipdos
          writeable = Yes
          guest ok = Yes

Current fstab:

/dev/sda4 /mnt/zipdos vfat user,noauto,mode=0777 0 0

(the mode= was an act of desperation - I've tried w&w/out)

The long version:

I'm running a lonely Linux box in an NT/W9X
network. I added a parallel Zip 100 to this box
a while back and have been using it (locally)
w/no problem.

A couple of the NT/W9x folks asked if they could
use that drive. I had previously Samba'd one of my
HD partitions, which they have been happily filling
up, so I said "No problem guys - Linux can do
anything!"

I Samba'd my /mnt/zipdos mountpoint (vfat-
formatted ZipDisks), walked over to one of
the W9x machines, popped open Network
Neighborhood, and there was my Zip - still
no problem. I said "Go to it guys" About
4.5 seconds later, they were standing around
my cube, disgruntled because they couldn't
write to the drive. They can read it fine,
just not write to it.

I've RTFM'd myself blue in the face chasing
this one, and I evidently haven't found the
right M to RTF, cause I'm at a loss. I suspect
this is more of a VFAT issue than a Zip
issue, In other words, I suspect if I had a
VFAT HD partition on my box that I tried
to Samba out, that I might encounter the
same stumbling block - I've fiddled with
fstab and Samba a bit, but haven't found the
magic combination yet

Any ideas? Thanks

Chris

Hello,

Contrary to what the Linux on Thinkpad FAQ list says,
it appears Linux definitely supports MicroChannel,
which the Thinkpad 720 has, however I cannot boot
up with Linux because the 720 it turns out has a
SCSI controller built in for the docking station,
and when the MCA kernel gets to doing a SCSI lookup
it hangs. The machine has an ESDI drive in it,
not SCSI. I tried using the bare.i bootdisk but that
one was not compiled with MCA support.

Has anyone out there got a workaround for this?
I am not able to produce new kernels or bootdisks myself.
Perhaps I could try a bootdisk made from a non-SCSI
MCA-enabled kernel. Can anybody point me to one?
I will be using Slackware.

Thank you
uwuh

Just follow the advice of general purpose reviews. The quality
of the device will probably be more of an issue for you than
        any Linux specific issues.

Mylex 352 (or 1100...), very nice dual channel 160 LVD controller with RAID.
Note that 64 bit PCI devices will work in 32 bit PCI slots.

Note also that the Mylex (as well as several others, but not DPT or Adaptec
AFAIK) use block drivers which are much more efficient than standard SCSI
drivers and are supported in the current 2.2 kernels. RH 6.2 installed
directly on a raid volume (Mylex controller) out of the box.

2M may be too small to mess with. I'd suggest an old Slackware

You may be able to install over 16M total, but it can only use 16M.

I have an old Compaq 386/87-SL 25 Mhz mono laptop with 12M RAM (4M

enough (exesive VM swapping). Could you discuss X performance with
12M RAM and any "special tweaking"? I'd like to use this for light
field use. My main limitation is the the HD is only 100M. Although,
I also have the docking station with a 500M HD, so installation would
be easy. I akso have an old 386/87-33DX 8M desktop PC, which I had
Linux running on briefely (no X). Could you comment on the relative
performance of an 8M 386-33DX vs. a 12M 386-25SL running Linux?

It works fine and compile the kernel a few times in a row.

But after some time the X die, resulting in the above message.
I manage to access using ssh and watch the log, there I see the above

I can't shutdown or run top ( ps works) , killing the X does not help

of course it won't restart.

Any one has experience with this board or error message?

At work we recently acquired a used SCSI CD Tower from somewhere else in the
company. I want to hook this up to my Slackware Linux system, but I'm
having a problem with it. It's being detected by the system, but only
partially.

The unit has a label on the back that says "Procom Technology CDT7-4X Plus."
When the SCSI module (advansys.o) is loaded, it tells me that it is a "CMD
TEC, Model SCEA-2000, Rev A6Z, type (31) Unknown"

I specified in my kernel parameters (2.2.14) that all LUNs should be probed,
but I'm only seeing LUN 0 reported. I tried looking all over the Procom web
site, but nothing jumped out at me as to what might be wrong. The SCSI card
that I'm using was shipped to us from the other department along with the
tower, so I have to believe it was working for them (most likely on a
Windows system). The card is a SIIG i540.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for further research, or offer
any suggestions on Linux configuration that I might have missed?

Thanks in advance.

I've got a Guillemot MaxiCougar TNT2/M64, 8MB, AGP, that works perfectly
with nVidia supplied drivers.

nvidia-X-GLX-335-i386-dyn.tar.gz 1646392 bytes, for XFree86-3.3.5

Check their web for XFree86-4.0
