Scott,
I would suggest asking that same question in
comp.os.linux.portable. They are extremly helpful over there ( Not to
say that they are not in here) and all issues relate to laptops of
some sort.

The F**king driver is included on the Win2k disk. I am using that model scsi
card and it performs better than the new 2936. You've got other problems.

Hey, I got it to work now.

I WAS able to use the boot disk! I had to use the 'root=/dev/sda3'
parameter. But shouldn't the boot disk know this already? It even
makes reference to '/dev/sda3' in the paragraph that precedes the boot
prompt.

Anyway, after getting it up and running, it was easy to change
'lilo.conf' and apply the changes.

Now I can boot to Red Hat Linux without a boot disk!

Thanks for your help..!

I have an external SCSI Zip drive and a scanner that is not powered ON all
the time. Is there a way to refresh the SCSI bus to recognize the "newly"
turned ON devices (similar to MyComputer->Properties->Devices->Refresh in
Win9x) without having to reboot the system? (Using Caldera eDesktop 2.4)

Thanks.

Hi,

I just installed RH 7.0 on a Dual PIII with ATA 100 HDs on the ATA100
ide2.
However, when I try to reboot from the HD the box hangs before arriving
at the lilo prompt. Actually, it hangs with the first two uppercase
charcaters of lilo, as

LI

If I boot from the floppy made during installation, and by feeding linux
ide2=...
it boots properly.

I tried to install lilo both in the MBR as well as on /dev/hde, but the
box behaves the same.

Any suggestions ?

Subject: Boot from PCMCIA
Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 11:43:33 GMT

Hi - I'm looking for some tips on booting from PCMCIA.

I have:
1. a SanDisk ATA flashdisk card;
2. hardware and BIOS that supports boot from PCMCIA.

I have been commisioned with the worthy task of debugging the h/w and BIOS
to make sure boot from PCMCIA is working before it goes into production.

Does anyone know what is the easiest way to get an OS onto the flash card?
In Linux I have tried:
   dd if="/boot/vmlinuz" of="/dev/hde"
where /dev/hde is where the ide_cs.o driver presents the card. Trouble is,
the system won't boot the kernel but I have no idea whether the h/w/BIOS is
to blame, or whether I've done something wrong.

Any ideas? Perhaps there is an easy, tried-and-tested way of putting DOS
onto it from
Windows?

I'd appreciate any help.

Cheers,

Simon

I have also tried the alsa 5.0.9d drivers, but I have not yet been able to
get them to load on boot, I can load them manually after boot but I still
get no sound.

Any Ideas?

Well, FWIW, my USB Zip drive (essentially a hard disk) works so well under

It's not about "speed" as much as "portability", I'll bet. Some of those
USB HDs are about the size of a hardcover book- great for when you need

which is a Trident Cyberblade i1. That is at least what I was told at

There are organizations behind specific projects or groups thereof. Two
that spring to mind are the Free Software Foundation and XFree86. I once
donated a video card to XFree86 (I think my name's in their supporters
