Nope, they're trying to access sectors at the end of the "63G"
partition. Since the drive is only 43G, they quite naturally barf.

I'd have to agree with that assessment.

I think the safest way would be to copy all the files from /dev/hda to
another place, then use FDISK.EXE or cfdisk to repartition the drive and
get it right this time, then make a FAT32 filesystem on the new
partition, and copy everything back. You can use a DOS bootdisk with
SYS.COM on it to restore the DOS bootrecord so LoseME will not barf upon
boot.
Another option is to resize the partition with a tool such as GNU
parted or FIPS.EXE. This might be tough as these programs will
naturally try to read beyond the 43G that actually exist on disk.
However, this would be much quicker! PartitionMagic is another option,
if you feel comfortable with payware. HTH,

Since I use an Orinoco (Wavelan) 803.11b card, I can't say what the support is
like.

I have a Yamaha CRW8824E burner, and earlier Yamahas are listed on the

As root:
cdrecord -scanbus

Nope. At least, I don't know of any, nor do I see a way to do that without
hard-booting the drive. I experience the same thing with a genuine SCSI
writer. My only advice is to make sure you have ample resources available
(don't run SETI) and be really sure you are ready to burn.

I encountered a bizarre problem with my slackware kernel refusing to run
my modem off ttyS0. The problem seemed to stem from the source:
drivers/char/serial.c. I replaced it with a RedHat version of serial.c
(there was only a few lines diferent), recompiled, and everything worked
properly.
Compare your serial.c with one from another distribution, that may be
the problem (I use a busmouse and have an outboard modem on ttyS0).
Or change to Debian, I did. ;-)

Because NetGear is not the only company using that chip. Try 'old_tulip'
and see if that works any better. I have had trouble with the newer
'tulip' not communicating until something on the network communicates with
it (doesn't speak until spoken to).
By default I think it wants to use irq 10, so check 'cat /proc/interrupts'
and make sure that nothing else is using that (I had to reconfigure my ISA
soundcard to use a different irq).

Naja, was heit crashen.

Subject: Setting ISA modem in Red Hat 7
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 05:33:05 GMT
Hello everyone,
Although I have checked the HOW-TOs on the Linux Documentation Project Page,
I was not able to find the answer to my question.
I am new to Linux. Please be as patient and as clear you can in your answer.
My problem is the following. I have installed Red Hat 7 on a Celeron system
which
also runs Win98 on it. Everything went fine, except for the recognition of my
modems.
I have two modems. One is a software modem Motorola SM 56k (PCI) and the other
one is an a hardware US Robotics Sportster 33.6K (ISA). I was expecting to have
problems with the software modem, but I thought that the hardware modem would be
recognized.
The hardware modem has two sets of jumpers. One set for setting the COM ports
and
the other for setting the IRQ. Being a total novice to Linux, I thought that I
should set
the COM to Plug and Play and the IRQ to 7. I chose 7 because under Windows, IRQ
7 was free.
My questions are:
How should I set the COM and the IRQ on this hardware modem such as to be
recognized by Linux? When setting the jumpers should I consider the COM and the
IRQ
of the other modem (under Windows)?
Please, respond to the group or remove CUT for a direct reply.
Thank you very much for your time and attention.
George

During last 7 days, the system dead when I left the system idle state three times.

The below is the log in /var/log/messages file.
Is APIC error make the system dead? I'm not sure at this point. Cause
I gonna rebuild Kernel 2.4.2 without APIC support.

Question from a newbie
Having just started looking at this.
I have a question
What is the purpose of having separate partitionsbeginning with /
Why would you not just create 1 partition and use subdirectories in that
partition..
Also where can I read up on a logical explanation of the meaning of
partitions such as
/
/boot
/build
/usr
/home
/opt
/src
I am planning to install on a backup Win2k machine.
It is a Pentium 166 with 80 meg of memory
It has a 20 gig drive that I am dedicating to system use
Of this 7 gig is used for Win2k
Giving me 13gig for linux
I am not deeply interested in the mechanics of Linux.
I am interested in getting away from Windows to get better performance
on some of my pet software projects
These will be coded in Java and ultimately be providing a value-added
service through my onw web-server.
Until the project is viable and can be farmed out, I need to run it on my
own intranet for testing, and on the web for revenue generation.
Possibly there will be a need to emulate Windows on some of the
applications...
I got an inkling of the purpose of all these partitions from the other posts
in this thread, but additional clarification and suggestions as to my setup
would be appreciated...
By the way, in Windows, and in DOS before that, I have always segregated my
files into 3 major groups
\Sys For all system files
\Data For all data files
\Progs For all program files
Thank you.

I posted this in c.o.l.setup last week since my hardware works, but no-one
responded. The problem is in configuring the software to access the
hardware...
---
I am getting frustrated with this problem. I had this drive working with
SuSE 6.2 eval, but it won't write anymore since I installed SuSE 6.4 eval.
I had problems with the distribution kernel 2.2.14(?) locking up in X
windows, so I grabbed 2.2.18 and compiled it instead. That fixed the
lockups, and I can read the CD just fine... I just can't seem to write to
it. I have tried several blank CD-Rs, and the results below are typical.
I have found a hint on the web that not all is well with ide-scsi and
newer versions of cdrecord:
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=cdrecord+ide-scsi+dummy&num=30\
&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&rnum=10&seld=930816565&ic=1
but nether earlier nor later versions of cdrecord seem to work for
me. Can anyone suggest direction to investigate further?

Subject: Looking for Phoneline networking help
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 00:48:56 -0800
Hi,
I have been scouring the net for this info, to no avail.
Here is my problem:
- I have a Pentium running Red Hat linux 7. I can connect it to the
network using a 3com ethernet card and a DSL modem. (Worked right out of
the box - way cool!)
- I have 2 other Pentium running Win 98. These 2 pentiums are networked
using our home phoneline. We used Linksys USB phoneline network
adapters. Works great.
- I want to add my Linux machine to our network, so I can turn it into
our gateway. I am looking for recommendations on phoneline networking
cards or devices that I can connect to this Linux box. Anyone out there
has done this? Once I have the card, what will I need to do to configure
it?
- Please, don't suggest a hub, all these computers are sitting in
different rooms, and I don't think I can easily rewire my house to allow
a hub setup.
Thanks in advance for any help you might provide.

How do these work? Do they send IP packets over the phone
wires, probably using a different pair to the phones? How
do you connect them to the Internet?
Cheers,
