Hi everybody! I've just upgraded my old-multipatched ;-) 2.2.16 kernel
(S.u.S.E. 7.0) to the brand new 2.4.5 version and I've also upgraded all
the utilities (included modutils) following the Documentation/Changes
file.
Now I've got the following problem: When normal users (root works fine)
try to load some modules (for example alsa sound modules and cdrom) they
get the following error:

/lib/modules/2.4.5/misc/snd-mixer-oss.o: create_module: Operation not
permitted
/lib/modules/2.4.5/misc/snd-mixer-oss.o: insmod snd-pcm-oss failed

I've tried to revert back to 2.2.16 and everything is fine. So it
shouldn't be a /dev directory permissions problem neither a problem
related to modprobe permissions.
Please help me my system is hung!

You could try to use the Compaq Jumpstart CD. Available from :

Normal users can't and never have been allowed to load kernel modules.

No it isn't. Pray tell how you manage to get users other than root to

Hi!

You can also look at www.alphalinux.org - primary source of information
about alpha on linux. In the docs section there are detailed instructions
for installation on different models.

Subject: MPACT Chromatic Research media processor
Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2001 11:31:17 GMT

This is the second time of trying to get Linux on my PC. The first time I
had so much trouble and began having Windows problems that I postponed the
expedition. Not to start up an MS issue but I need it for school work ( at
least until I get Linux up and familiar with it )

I think I just got the os to install. At least now I can boot into Linux and
get into the login screen. I'm able to logon as root and as a user. My
problem is with setting up the XF86Setup... to actually get a GUI desktop.
I've installed Caldera openLinux 1.3 (please no suggestions for other
version as this is the only one I can afford for now). I keep getting a
message telling me that XF86 isn't config'd properly and can't connect to
server. I have the MPACT media processor. Early this morning I found out
that they were bought out and no longer offer support for MPACT products.
They were purchased by MAX Internet Communication and are now at
http://www.maxic.com/

I get 24bit color with 1280 X 1024 resolution on Windows. I'm so psyched to
get into the KDE that I would be happy with 16 color @ 800X600.
I don't know if I have to download drivers or what there called for Linux or
if there's a generic way to setup the XF86 configuration.

Could someone help me get a desktop up on this system or where could I go
for help?

Chris

Because if I did this, security would go out the window completely. With
only the one ethernet card, I'd have to hook the DSL modem straight into
the firm's hub, and then *nothing* would prevent SMB messages from crossing
between the firm and the outside world. Not good, especially considering
the really lousy security in Win95's filesharing.

If I put two ethernet cards in the Linux machine, it can act as a firewall
and block all SMB traffic, for instance---they're two physically separate
networks. (Not as secure as an air gap, but about as good as I can get it
while preserving at least *some* connectivity with the outside world.)

OK, OK! Maybe I was a little bit misleading in my first message. The
problem is that users can't access devices that are associated to
modules in modules.conf, in particular cdroms:
emilio@Linux:~ > mount /cdrom
mount: /dev/sr0: unknown device

thing that wasn't happening with the 2.2.16.

Hi,

This card is listed as supported on Redhat's hardware list:

http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/genpage2.cgi

Did you try looking in bugzilla to see if anyone else is having problems?

http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/

Try posting it to bugzilla, if someone hasn't already.

This is for a Mandrake 8.0 system & USB Zip 100, but might work
insmod usbcore
insmod usb-uhci (you might need usb-ohci)
insmod usbstorage

then mount /dev/sda4 to wherever

My one recommendation, don't spend so much on a raid/caching controller if
all
you will use is two drives. Pretty pointless. And for a server, your not
going to
need to worry about video card, monitor or cdrom speed necessarily. Drop
those
components to max out on memory.

It's not "my view". It is rude to ask for mail unless you're on a for-sale

have read a dozen times already. Sorry for the stark approach but there's
no more content to give, no need to add frills.

Subject: Linux on Integrated Graphics Card Motherboard
Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2001 09:57:56 -0400

Anyone,

I am trying to get RH 7.0 up and running on a new POS Gateway PC (K-6). The
Graphics card (and most other devices for that matter) are embeded on the
motherboard. It is designed so that some of my system ram is used as video
ram, no idea of this when I bought system.

Anyway when RH is installing it shows me the Trident CyberBlade (generic) at
the point of the X-window config. If I select Test Config my screen goes
black for a minute or so and then comes back to the Installation GUI. It
never seems to install properly.

After successfully installing RH I can work great in the character mode but
if I do a startx my screen goes black and I never come back. Seems that
drivers are not working for X-windows on this motherboard. How did the GUI
install run if Linux will not support this graphics card?

Any ideas how to fix this issue???????

Info on Motherborad
Model: MP4M-23AGM
Rev: 1.0
Date: 00/08/22
PCB NO: BA41-00179A

Told by Gateway that graphics card info is:

[big snip]

Thankyou to everybody who replied to my original post. I now have things
_mostly_ sorted out. I am now running smoothly with

hdparm -c 1 -d 1 -m 16 /dev/hda

NB I changed my mobo (for another reason) in the meantime to a 440BX-based
one, and now the HDD is on /dev/hda.

hdparm -t /dev/hda now gives me about 23 MB/sec. The problems occur
when I try to enable UDMA/33 using -X 66 the system hangs. Even trying
to enable simple multiword DMA mode 2 (-X 34) will cause it to hang.
In an earlier post in this thread, Peter mentioned that DMA might not
work. (Which is indeed the case; even on the previous KT133-based mobo
I used this happened.) Why would this be? Is there some problem with
the ATA driver in kernel 2.2.19?

Once again, thanks very much in advance!

Interesting. Don't you have the right aliases in /etc/modules.conf
for it? And isn't it /dev/scd0, not /dev/sr0? I'd imagine either the
names or the aliases or the majors have changed. Try it with something
you know hasn't changed, like floppy!

> thing that wasn't happening with the 2.2.16.

Well, so? You changed the kernel. You have to change modutils to go
with it. You did, did you not? Are you running devfs? Did you enable
kmod? What are the kernel messages you receive? Give us some info,
don't leave it blank!

  oboe:/usr/info% ls -l /dev/scsi/cdrom/scd0
  brw-r----- 1 root disk 11, 0 Jul 18 1994 /dev/scsi/cdrom/scd0

and why are you trying to access a scsi disk? Do you HAVE a scsi disk?
Show me it on the /proc/scsi printout. Are you perhaps relying on a
scsi emulation that is no longer needed?

There's mounds and mounds of things you are not telling. Don't keep it
to yourself. You can't get help if you keep secrets!

Hi everybody,

I have HP Pavilion 97xx with famous Riptide sound card and Rockwell
HSF/Conexant Soft56k modem (two separate devies - it is NOT the combo

I am running RH 7.0 with 2.2.16 kernel, and am a beginner.
Does anybody here got them both to work?

For the modem:
(yes, I realize it is WinModem, but there are special drivers for it)
I tried to install the driver by Imran Ghory from
http://www.cyberspace.org/~imran/hsflinux.htm, but ins_all script gives
me the error "cannot find apropriate .inf file", although the file is in
the same directory.
For the sound-card:
Tried to use sb module - no luck. I care much more about the modem, but
it could be nice to have sound card working, too.

Thank you very much for any help. I really need it...

You need to compile your kernel with module auto-loading support.

I had an older computer P200 that had both SIMM and DIMM slots. I had
32 megs of simm (pair of 16 megs) in the first simm bank. I then
installed a 64meg Dimm in the first Dimm bank. The computer only found
32 of the 64 meg Dimm, for a total of 64 megs.
With my motherboard, the Simm and Dimm banks were shared. So, to get it
to work right I had to use the second Dimm bank for the 64 meg stick. I
kept the pair of 16 meg Simms in the first Simm bank. The computer now
has 96megs.

Subject: ATA/100 Setup

Currently, I have the following setup. I have Windows installed on 2
GB partition of my main IDE drive. On the other 8 GBs is Linux. I
have the dual boot and all of that nice stuff. I also have a 40 GB
ATA HDD that is on a Promise ATA-100 PCI Card. I am running RedHat
7.0.. can anyone give me some insight on how to get this hard drive to
work in Linux? Any help would be most appreciated. I know this is
probably a stupid question but I'm pretty new at this stuff. Thanks
in advance.

Uh-oh. Indeed this is the Gateway OEM SBLive! with digital output and
Boston Acoustics speakers. I looked through the archives of the
email list at http://opensource.creative.com and saw what you referred
to. There doesn't seem to be any fix to the emu10k driver as yet to
get this up and running. :o<
