Well, I am sure you started composing in vi, mutt's default editor. vi is
quite intimidating for beginners. I suggest you use one of the simpler to use
editors (pico or joe) as your editor for mutt.

Put
set editor=/usr/bin/pico in your .muttrc, to edit with pico.

If you want to try vi, you might need to look through one of the many vi
tutorials that exist on the net.
