When you are on line, your machine becomes a part of net and all the servers
like, smtp, telnted, ftpd are available to any one. It does not matter if
you are root or not. It is a good practice to have bug free software even at
home machine. The problem may not be that serious with dial out ISP but it
is definitely very serious with DSL lines where your machine is always
connected with the net.
The habit of having a good fire wall will definitely help in a long way.
