Hi,
I have a Trident9750-(The Culprit Card). It did'nt respond during the
x-server conf during RH6.2 installation. It just gave out black
screens(Which never happened during RH6.1 install before).
I just skipped x-conf, & chose a text based login and installed everything.
Then fired xf86config , from # , tried out several clock chip settings,
1 -st choice seemed to work for me. I have a Compaq 140 SVGA.
Here's some info culled from exocore............
Unfortunately, most Trident PCI/AGP cards sold in India seem to be cut down
versions lacking some circuitry - basically the TV-OUT circuitry. However,
the BIOS remains unchanged, and tells the Linux driver that the TV-OUT is
the primary display, so the driver accesses the circuitry (which isn't
there) and hangs the system.
You can verify this by running the command
X -probeonly &> /tmp/probe.txt
less /tmp/probe.txt
If you see a reference to talking to the TV out port, you know that you have
one of these illfated cards. Since the developers of the drivers will have
never seen a card like this (unique to India), a fix is unlikely to come -
so you may have to change your card
Guess you have to reconfigure X.
there's a reconfig command (man xf86config), never used it though.
Regards
Kaushik
