You dont mention whether you are trying to login remotely into that machine or
locally.In case it is local then try booting into single user mode by typing
linux single at bootprompt.If that works then login and change the default
runlevel in /etc/inittab to full multiuser mode (not graphical).Reboot and
then see.There may be other methods but I use this method when I find that on
booting up I get an intermiitently blinking text display of login and I cant
login because whats on the screen is not visible.I dont know why this happens
but I have faced the problem a number of times especially when changing
display cards or after configuring X.
