I assumed you were working with classfiles (after extracting the zip file
to the $HOME/oracle-blah-blah-blah). Whenever you're working with a .zip
or .jar file, the CLASSPATH should include the name of the zip/jar file.

As for the connection problem - it could be DNS or check if you have the
Oracle Server listening for client connections. On NT you've to start the 
TNS Listener service (or something similar sounding - pardon my aging gray 
cells) on your server - don't know about Linux..
