the cih does not trash a hdd, but writes junk to the first 2mb thus over
writing almost all of FAT and DIR for dos + the TABLE of the hdd
also this can erase boot block of bios.

did you try out the modem jumper configs, i think the modem has
jumper configs and can be configured to port com2, then disable ur
com2 or switch it to com3 from bios. then you will be able to use
modem from linux too. check out tomshardware.com, or www.creaf.com
