Depends on the distribution. Looking at the login prompt, as was suggested
by Rajeev, is not guaranteed to work. This is because Good Sys Admins will
disable their telnetd, ftpd, MTA etc. from printing out the distribution
name and version number (a security measure. If you knew the version of
ftpd that I am running it will be easy for you to find out the known
exploits in it and use it to break in).
The existence of a file /etc/debian_version will indicate that it is a
Debian distribution. RH will have comething similar.
