        /etc/redhat-release and /etc/mandrake-release  on the respective
systems. In general, querying a package manager (using rpm on RH and
Mandrake, similier ones on other distros) might help. If the m/c has rpm
installed, rpm -qi passwd  might tell u the distribution. (rpm is
installed on RH and Mandrake.) You can guess the version from the date of
build of rpm.
