Probably your linux partition is beyond 1024 sectors. Try creating a small 15-20
MB /boot partition within first 1024 cylinders or get new lilo from
http://judi.greens.org/lilo/.
If you are installing it for the first time, first option is preferrable. You
need not reinstall anything.
