You don't need to reboot your machine to take chages in effect. You need to come
out of X and restart it.

Secondly merely putting those resolution may not work if proper HSync and VSync
frequencies for the monitor are not entered(in the same /etc/X11/XF86Config
only). If nothing, wrong frequencies can *blow* your monitor. So be careful
while you are fiddling with them. If monitor starts flashing, the immediately
press ctrl+alt+backspace to kill X. If you wait there too long, you may loose
your monitor...
