I am using kppp in SuSE sometimes. It works in user login. I have just done 

chmod +s on /opt/kde/bin/kppp

Mostly I use kwvdial to dial to the net. Sometimes on our goatelecom server the script 
based login creates problem at that time I use kppp to do manual login.
