It is just order that you change ijn resolving hostname ,like you have setup
dns and your system looks at /etc/hosts due /etc/hosts.conf .
This can take up to 15 min for an ftp to a very next m/c itself .
also /etc/nsswitch.conf should point to the dns server if you doing an ftp to a
fully qualified domain.
