Yes, its the autofs which confounded us.
Any clue as to why this is done by autofs?
Although this problem did not affect my work directly, it
helped me learn a few new commands. Thanks to all of you.

sory abt the erlier mesage. i was too excited to tell u all abt the my
discoveries with diferent distros. :-))
later i ran "fuser" on /misc and found that "automounter" daemon was
using it. after doin a /etc/rc.d/init.d/autofs stop, i got the /misc
showin the corect size (1024, my cluster size being that).
