 The user / group ftp already exists on his machine - only thing is that he has
 gone and deleted the /home/ftp directory.  He can just re-create it if he
 needs it and chown ftp. /home/ftp (note the . - that is, user and group are
 both updated)
 
 In fact you dont need it at all .... so edit /etc/passwd *use vipw for this*
 and remove the homedir entry for ftp
