Hi Archan,
Thanx very much for the response.
When I tried the GUI mode installation of Mandrake 7.2, after the initial
few screens which were in GUI mode, I got thrown into the text(???) mode
again for configuration of network etc... I was facing this problem with
the ftp install...
Later on trying the NFS install, it succeeded, but it somehow screwed up
the LILO installation (on reboot it said, second stage boot loading
failed - or something similar - my eye-sight gets pretty sore at 2AM in
the morning!!) and I was running out of time so I couldn't try things
further...
One more thing I noticed was - I chose "Expert mode" installation and it
promptly asked me "Are U sure U are an expert??"(!!!) etc, but gave me no
further choices!!! I was not allowed to choose my partition sizes (only
full disk or not - even in full disk I wud've expected to make my own
partitions). The only choices I got wrt package installations were (KDE -
300 odd MB, GNOME - 300 odd MB, utitilies - 400 odd MB, miscellaneous -
400 odd MB (what can anyone ever get out of these messages - reminds one
of winduz)!!!
One really appreciable thing about the install process anyway was that
hardware detection was superb!! It detected my old ISA NIC, graphics card
etc without any problems whearas even with RH 6.2, I had to specify the
settings manually.
Was I doing something wrong???
One doubt here - where is the source for the install program??
I'll be trying the same install again this week-end, so if U want me to
try out a few things or make notes etc - just let me know and I'll report
to the list about my findings...
Thanks once again,
Cheers,
Narain.
