Are you sure you are using your ISP's mail server and not some other ISP's
mail server? There SHOULDN'T ever be a problem using your ISP's mail
server while sending mails through their mail system. After all, you are
part of thier network.
If you don't use the smart host option your mails are being delivered one
by one directly to the recipient's mail exchanger. The time taken to
deliver such mails widely vary according to the network speed. SO it is
going to work but take a long time.
