this is pop before smtp. A far better thing to do (if you are running a
mailserver with roaming users) is smtp auth

just before you run sendmail to process the queue, run fetchmail to fetch
mails from vsnl. That will give you a window of maybe 30 minutes (might vary)
to relay mails through.
For true auth (LOGIN, CRAM-MD5 and such) - see http://www.sendmail.org - there
is a howto on setting up sendmail (and the cyrus sasl libraries) to do auth.
