In /etc/rc.d/rc.local, put /sbin/hdparm instead of hdparm. Usually you won't see error
thrown as screen is quickly cleared for login prompt. But perhaps /sbin is not in the
path that time....
Also -k flag is of no use if you power off the machine. It keeps the setting if you
reset the machine, not other wise.
BTW how does one verify that UDMA modes are enabled? -X stuff is too dangerous for me.
Caused one reinstall due to DMA hang... But any other way?
