Looks like pop3d is getting killed half-way. May be a segfault ?
Edit /etc/inetd.conf & search for pop3. Change the entry to add the option
-h to pop3d.

Eg. If your entry is like this:
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.pop3d

Change it to:
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.pop3d -d

If your pop3 daemon is different, read the man page & find out the option
for debugging & put that option instead of -d. See that you give the
maximum debug level.

Now let inetd re-read your config as:
killall -HUP inetd

Now try to connect. After this, check out /var/log/pop3.log & check out
anything interesting is logged.

[ BTW, did you try with diff. user IDs ? ]
